Ways to Cope as a Newly Single Parent

group of parents walkingCoping when you are a newly single parent is not easy. Not only are you grieving the loss of your relationship, but you have your little one or ones to look after. The easiest thing to do would be to retreat and let life take over, but that is not the answer. The following tips will help you get through this rough patch and emerge a stronger person.

Seek Support

No one is supposed to go it alone in this world, and single parents are no exception. To get through any rough patch, it is essential to seek the support of your friends and family. Plus, single parents have a unique opportunity to call on their own peers. Many times, other single parents will pitch in and help when needed. Find a single parent support group in your area like “Parents Without Partners” or similar groups.

Take Care of You

Regardless of how old your children are you are no good to them if you are not healthy physically and mentally. That is why it is important to tend to your own physical and emotional needs. Make sure you eat regular meals, exercise, and visit the doctor if you are not feeling well. Plus, take some time for yourself each day to recharge your emotional battery. Read a book, take a bubble bath, or watch a program you enjoy all by yourself.

Create Family Time

It is important to remember that this is a difficult time for your children too. For this reason, you need to make sure you are available to listen to their concerns and spend time with them. Whether you spend extra time tucking them in by reading a book each night, or you add a family game night to the schedule, spending extra time with them will help. It can ease the transition and help open the lines of communication during a difficult time.

Be Positive

Even though this is a difficult time, it can also be a time of growth and positive change. Examine your situation and determine what good can come out of it, be it a new career, new independence, a closer relationship with your children, or even an opportunity to meet new people. No matter how negative the circumstance was that led you to this place, it is important to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel.
