I am speechless at the callousness of this advice — that poor little boy!! First his mother hands him off to a stranger, and then the stranger, who is also a mother, is supposed to ignore his discomfort because her own child is experiencing normal emotion? YOUR child is safe and secure with her mother. That little boy is among new people who probably scare him, including an adult who he should be able to trust to look out for him. This answer is HALF-right. The thing to say is, "I’m sure it’s hard to have a strange person here. I’m sure he misses his mom, too. Don’t worry, I’m staying with you, but let’s be nice to him until he can go to HIS Mommy." It is of course possible to both show your child unconditional love and establish that demonstrating empathy is important to you. Your example means such a great deal. Even if your child is not ready to demonstrate empathy, watching you demonstrate it is terribly important.
