The Pros and Cons of Pacifiers
So why introduce a pacifier at all? The act of sucking is the first soothing technique a child learns. Some even learn it in utero by sucking their thumb. It helps a baby feel comforted. Providing a pacifier rather than a thumb is just parental preference. Some believe that it is easier to break the pacifier habit than the thumb-sucking habit because, well, you can’t take away someone’s thumbs.
It’s really up to you. There are challenges to both sides of the argument. I recently marveled at a co-worker’s child because she never took to a pacifier, whereas my daughter is in love with hers, and I worry about the day I have to take it away. She laughed and said she wished her daughter had used a pacifier—it takes a lot more to calm her down without one. So there you have it—there’s never an easy answer!
