Tear Duct Obstruction: What Is It?

There isn’t a way to prevent your baby from being born with a congenital obstruction. However, you can take some specific precautions to prevent your children’s chances of developing a blocked tear duct.

To prevent the infections that can lead to a tear duct obstruction, you and your children can:

  • wash hands frequently;
  • refrain from touching or rubbing the eyes;
  • replace eye makeup often, and don’t share it with others;
  • take proper care of contact lenses; and
  • avoid physical contact with anyone who has pink eye.

If you suspect your child is suffering from a blocked tear duct, and you decide to take that trip to the doctor, be prepared for the doctor to perform an eye exam and several tests to determine the location and cause of the obstruction. These tests will help the doctor choose the best treatment for your child.

The good news is that blocked tear ducts can almost always be treated successfully. According to KidsHealth, “more than 90% of all cases resolve by the time kids are 1 year old with little or no treatment.” Chances are, your child will be part of that 90%!
