SMEP: Increasing Your Ovulation Awareness

“Humans are not the most efficient reproducers, but there is cumulative success month to month. Usually 60 to 70% of couples will have conceived within six to eight months.”

It seems like an easy enough task to become pregnant, but in reality, the odds are stacked against you. For every month of trying to conceive (TTC), there is only a one-in-four shot of actually becoming pregnant. Some people increase their odds by employing the “Sperm Meets Egg Plan” (SMEP). This plan is based on ovulation awareness and timing intercourse to mesh with peak fertility days.

Dr. Amber Cooper, assistant professor in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Washington University and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Specialist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, thinks SMEP is “a reasonable plan that will cover the fertile window for most couples.”

This plan was developed by Deanna Roy in 1999 and ensures every opportunity for sperm to meet the egg each cycle. Though the plan was originally designed for those who had a miscarriage, it is now commonly used by anyone trying to conceive.

It has been said that up to 40% of women who are  post-miscarriage get pregnant on their first try when following the plan; that is double the number of the normal population not on the plan.

“In general, for a young, healthy couple, average fertility chances are 20 to 25% each month,” said Dr. Cooper. “Humans are not the most efficient reproducers, but there is cumulative success month to month. Usually 60 to 70% of couples will have conceived within six to eight months.”
