Is It Time For You To Hire A Babysitter?

During my pregnancy with my fourth baby, I decided that it was time to explore hiring a babysitter. But, as a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom, I struggled (a lot) with the decision.

Was I ready for a babysitter? Did I really need one? Could I even afford one?

Here are a few of the questions I asked myself about hiring a babysitter and how I made the best decision for me.

Can I make more money with a babysitter?

I struggled a lot with the decision to hire a babysitter–how could I pay someone to do what I could do for free?–until I read a great article by Meagan Francis of The Happiest Home. In it, she detailed her own realization that she could actually make more money if she hired help (hers was in the form of a cleaner) part-time. Once I added it up, I realized she was right. And even if you are a parent who works from home and feels guilty about hiring a babysitter, just imagine taking a baby to work at any other job. Ridiculous, right?

Could this be an investment in my family's future?

Even if you feel like you won't make a direct profit out of hiring a babysitter, it's also important not to overlook the long-term impact of hiring a babysitter. Could the time spent now networking or brushing up your resume, translate into financial gain or security for you and your family later down the road? It may be worthwhile to think of hiring a sitter now as an investment.

Could a babysitter help me be a better parent?

There are times when I struggle with having a babysitter once or twice a week if I don't have a lot of work to do that particular week but, my husband is always quick to remind me that it's important for my mental health to have a break once in a while, too. Even though I never have a sitter unless I'm working, he would be 100% OK with me hiring a sitter to simply have a break once in a while, and I have to admit (as hard as it is for me), that he's right–sometimes it's not always about the money, but it's about what can help you be the best parent you can be.

Will I be comfortable delegating to a babysitter?

The hardest part about me hiring a babysitter has been learning to trust her and delegate responsibilities to her. Especially because I'm at home working while she's here, I had to ask myself what responsibilities I would be comfortable delegating to her. In my case, I decided that while my daughter was still little, I was more comfortable keeping her with me while I hired a sitter for the older kids. Be honest with yourself about your comfort level in hiring a sitter and it can help you decide if you're ready for that step.
