I threw this question out on Facebook a while back: “What is your biggest shopping challenge when it comes to saving money?” And the overwhelming response was “It's hard to know if you are really getting the best deal available when you buy something.” Luckily, there is an app for that! Well, actually there are lots of apps for that! But I've narrowed them down to five.

Here are the 5 of the best shopping apps that you should have on your phone now!

Favado

App #1. Favado

Favado is a free app, available for iPhone and Android. The app helps you save money at the grocery store. It takes the best features of a deal-matching site, combines it with a grocery list app, and puts it all on your phone. You tell Favado what local stores you want to shop at, and the sales items and prices are immediately available for you to browse. You can add items to your grocery list as you scroll through the list. The app even tells you if there are newspaper or online coupons that you can use to score an even better deal. And while you can't print the coupons directly from the app, you can email yourself your shopping list and open it on your computer and print the online coupons from there.

Target Cartwheel

App #2. Target Cartwheel

If you are a die-hard Target shopper, you probably already know that one of the best ways to score a good deal at Target is to stack a manufacturer's coupon with a Target coupon (which you can find on Target's website or sometimes in the Sunday paper). And when you charge your purchases to your Target REDCard (paying off the balance monthly so as to not incur finance charges, of course!), you will receive an additional 5% off your total.

And now there's one more way to save at Target! The Target Cartwheel app! Upon logging onto the app, you will be presented with offers of up to 30% off an item. You can select the offers you are interested in (up to 10 when you begin, but you can earn additional offer slots by unlocking Cartwheel badges), and then save the offers to My Cartwheel. Simply hand your phone to cashier to scan your discount code when checking out–and BOOM–more money stays in your pocket! This app is free and available for iPhone and Android.

Coupon Sherpa

App #3. Coupon Sherpa

The Coupon Sherpa app uses the built-in GPS info on your smartphone to look for internet coupons currently being offered by retailers in your area. You can then click on the coupon from your phone, and when checking out, the cashier can scan the coupon directly from your phone. This apps works for restaurants, local stores, and services, but it will not allow you to select and scan internet grocery coupons because internet coupons are limited to two prints per computer, and coupon manufacturers have not found a way to limit uses for mobile phones right now. So until the technology catches up, this will not work for grocery coupons. This app is free and available for iPhone and Android.
Shop for Kids

App #4. Shop for Kids

This must-have app was created by the folks from TimetoPlayMag, and it is the best app to use when shopping for kids toys, and it's free for iPhone and Android. Not only can you search the app for the best possible price on the item you are considering, but you can also read TimetoPlayMag's reviews of the product, as well as watch videos so you can truly understand how the toy functions, and you can also click through to purchase it online right from the app.

Red Laser

App #5. Red Laser

Red Laser is a price-comparison app that allows you to look up an item and compare prices both at a store located near you as well as online. You can scan the bar code if you are standing there in the store and are wondering whether or not an item is truly at its best price. You can even purchase the item right from within the app! This app is free and available for iPhone, Android, and Windows Phones.

The one thing I want to point out is that when I tested the app, I found that it wasn't always giving me the best prices or even a full list of online availability. I searched for the Disney Infinity playset for the Wii, and the only online listing that came up was on Ebay for $99.99. But when I used my laptop to conduct a Google search for the same item, I found that this is available in many stores online at a retail price of $59.97. So be aware that no system is foolproof!
