Crawling is one of those milestones in a baby's life that opens up a completely new world for them. First time parents may hope their baby starts moving – like it's a sign of super smarts in their child – but I felt a little differently.

Parents who have older children know that once that baby starts moving on his own, it also opens a whole new world of troubles. Your baby is all about exploring and gets into everything! You have to watch what is on the floor, any hazards that may be lurking, and your baby will rarely stay where you left him.

Silver started crawling much earlier than I anticipated – at just around six months old. Babies usually begin crawling somewhere in the 6-12 month range, but having him go at it a little earlier caught me off guard. He showed signs of movement about a month before he really started motoring, and if I was thinking clearly (I blame super sleep deprivation), I would have picked up a few products to have in the house before he started getting into everything.

If you have a new baby around the age where s/he may start crawling, here are my suggestions on what products you need to have in the house, ready to go, before your baby starts crawling.

Baby Gates

Baby gates are useful for a few reasons: they can block off any safety concerns like stairs, and also can limit where your baby will crawl off to. I have one gate blocking off the kitchen because baby loves to motor to the cat food and try to eat it.

Make sure you're using the correct gates for where they are being placed and following all instructions on the product. It's especially important if you're installing them near stairs or other fall hazards.

Since we co-sleep and bed-share, when Silver started crawling, we had to move him to his own floor bed to reduce any chances of falling. We created a “second bedroom” within our room using a twin mattress and a baby gate.

Soft Shoes

For my kids, when they start crawling, they quickly move to pulling themselves up and that can cause slips and falls if they're wearing socks only. We like to put Silver in soft baby shoes that promote foot development, keep his feet warm on the cool floor, and they help protect him from slipping.

Soft Mats or Rugs

I have laminate, hardwood, and ceramic floors on the main level where we spend most of our time. Since Silver is crawling, pulling up on things, and cruising all over the place, having softer flooring for his knees and if the takes a small tumble can make a big difference for him.

Outlet Covers

Baby-proofing is important when your baby starts moving along, and one of the first places we proof is the electrical outlets. Doing it before baby starts crawling means it's one less thing you need to worry about, because if your baby is anything like mine – that's the first thing they will start exploring.
