Answer this: How many times did you search for something on the ‘ol Google machine while you were expecting?

For me, it was approximately 23,0498 times, give or take a few, especially during my first pregnancy, when I had no clue what was happening with my body.

“Can I eat hot dogs?” “Is it normal to snore so much?” “Chinese gender chart” “Do boys really pee on you?”–all these and more were part of my 40 weeks of search queries on Google.

It turns out, I'm not the only one. In a recent survey of anonymous web searches from countries all over the world, a picture of what pregnant women are really searching for became very clear. In the United States and Australia, “How to prevent stretch marks” topped the list, while in India, the top five “how to …” search queries were sleep, do sex, have sex, sex, and take care. In Britain, “lose weight” topped the list, and “stop vomiting” topped the list in both Nigeria and South Africa.

Worries about food and activities were also different from country to country. According to the survey, Americans are concerned about eating shrimp, drinking wine, drinking coffee, eating sushi, and taking Tylenol. In India, the pregnant Googlers wondered if they could eat pizza, mangoes, bananas, papayas … and if they could have sex. In Brazil, the top searches were about the safety of hair dye and riding bikes. British pregnant women were mostly concerned about food–cheesecake and mozzarella. And in Germany, the top question asked is if pregnant women can fly.

I asked some of my mama friends what questions they wanted to know the answers to on Google during their pregnancy, and their answers did not disappoint!

Many women were curious about what that little bundle of joy looked like at various points in his or her development. Crystal Cash White, mom of one son, said, “I Googled to see what he would look like at that stage in the pregnancy. I wanted to know how big he probably was, what was developing, etc.”

“Is it normal to crave the smell of cleaning supplies while pregnant?” After talking to my doctor, I was reassured it was normal and likely just my hormones, but it's true–I enjoy cleaning while pregnant since I love the after-smells!”

“When I was pregnant with Josie (my first), I got this very itchy rash on my tummy during the last few weeks. So I looked it up, and it was confirmed by my midwife. It was PUPP, or pruritic urticarial papules. I got daily emails [on development] so that was pretty cool to read about what to expect during that particular stage, and it was usually right on target of when I experienced it.”

“I Googled everything! What meds are OK to take for different things (headache, heartburn, other pregnancy-related things that people probably don't want to read about) and are x, x, and/or x (sciatic nerve, low BP, etc.) normal.”
