Once a baby makes his arrival in the home he usually brings with him mountains of things: clothing that he outgrows way too quickly, a crib, feeding gear, and lots of toys — many of which are plastic. While your little one will be using all of these things to keep him safe, comfortable, and entertained, when Earth Day rolls around some parents may pause to think about the environmental impact of all of the things needed to get baby through the first few years.

Fortunately, there are some eco-friendly alternatives. Even purchasing one or two earth-friendly alternatives may have an impact and can help teach your little one the importance of caring for Mother Earth.

Green Toys are made from 100% recycled plastic. They are good for the earth and good for kids who like to put everything in their mouths since they surpass international safety standards for children's toys. What's more, since Green Toys are made in the US, their environmental impact from shipping is less than that of toys shipped from overseas. Try the adorable (and baby-safe) rescue boat and helicopter, a tea set, or puzzle.

Since babies need so many things, their caregivers need some way to carry them around. Try a Lassig Green Label diaper bag, which are not just cute as can be, but are made from fabric sourced from recycled plastic bottles.

Your baby, and eventually big kid, spends hours of his life sleeping, so a mattress that's good for the environment and good for him is a wise choice. Naturalmat is made with materials like mohair and organic lambswool that don't off-gas and allow air to circulate.

It's a fact of life that little kids love to eat things out of a pouch. But, all of those pouches can load up a landfill quickly. Enter The Original Squeeze, made from silicone, that allows parents to refill pouches over and over with applesauce, yogurt, or whatever their child loves.
