With summer in full swing now, families will be hitting the roads, air and rails to explore new and old destinations. Traveling with young children is not easy, but with modifications and a lot of patience it is possible. Dare I even say it can be enjoyable?

I love watching my children explore new places and experience new adventures. We will be taking a few long road trips this summer since flying with three kids is not in our budget lately. I asked friends for some advice on tips for travel with young children. Here are some of my favorite ideas that I will be sure to use.

Even if you are anti screen time parents, movies are a must for travel. I'm not afraid to shout it from the rooftops, I love my built in DVD player in my mom van. If you are traveling by plane or train, tablets are perfect for entertaining your kids with movies and games. Be sure to bring an external charger for your electronic devices.

Plan a few outings that are centered around kids, such as a children's museum. Since you are more than likely to be staying in accommodations that are not baby proofed, one of the hardest parts of traveling is keeping your child safe in such places. It's a huge relief to let kids run around somewhere where everything is designed for little hands.

Bookstores, such as Barnes and Nobel, are always great places to stop when on the road. You can't go wrong with books, train tables, and Starbucks.

When your kids have just had enough of the car, outdoor playgrounds and mall play zones will give you a few moments to regroup. It is just necessary to let those little legs run!

When traveling by air, be prepared for everything. Flight delays, cancellations and gate changes happen. Even if you have a layover, bring food with you for your little ones. Something may happen and you might not have time to get food during your layover.

For smaller ones, introduce a new toy as you travel. Allow that toy to be a travel only toy. That way they're excited when they have a “new toy” to play with.

Don't be fearful or mind the stares you'll get when your child cries. People WILL look. Just ignore them. Crying is a part of childhood. If you are feeling frustrated, take a deep breath and remind yourself that they will fall asleep eventually. They always do.
