8 Must-Have Items for a Trip to Grandma and Grandpa’s House
As a child, spending the night at my grandmother's house was always such a treat. Throughout the week, I would eagerly anticipate the weekend and wonder what we would do. When Friday finally arrived, my mom would help me pack my small Strawberry Shortcake suitcase. My grandmother would pick me up right after school. The weekend would be filled with movies, tea parties, and maybe even a trip to the park to feed the ducks. I have such wonderful memories of these weekends at Grandma's.
We, unfortunately, live 500 miles from the closest set of grandparents, so my kids don't take special trips to visit them. We are lucky if we get to see them annually. There are plenty of couples that live closer to their parents, so these visits are pretty regular. I asked several of my friends what are some must-have items when packing for a trip to Grandma and Grandpa's house, and here is what they had to say.
You're going to need plenty of clothes for the length of the stay for a variety of activities. The last thing you want is for your child to run out of underwear while at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Knowing my boys, they would likely to wear the same pair of underwear all weekend.
Encourage your child to pack a travel-size backpack with their favorite toys and their special stuffed animal or blanket if they have one. By letting them pack their own toy bag, they are taking ownership and can't blame you for leaving something at home.
Help your child pack up any electronic tablets, chargers, and extra batteries for downtime at their grandparents' house. The grandparents will appreciate this extra step.
If your child still needs mealtime helpers such as sippy cups or a booster seat, be sure to pack those.
Additionally, be sure to supply and help install your child's car seat or booster.
Don't forget your child's essential items such as their toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and any other medication they may require.
If your child has specific snacks they really love, or needs specific foods due to an allergy or other issue, be sure to pack those.
My children still use white-noise machines at night. If your child does as well, be sure to purchase a travel-sized white-noise machine or one of those stuffed animals that produce white noise.
