5 Winter Wear Essentials For Babies
Somehow, even though I've had four kids, winter still seems to catch me by surprise. I always manage to forget that, unlike my older kids, who have piles of snow boots and mittens to choose from, my baby needs a little extra attention in the winterizing department.
Choosing winter pieces for a baby can be somewhat difficult. You need warm pieces that will fit in the car seat, are functional yet still adorable (because babies always need to look adorable), and that will last through the inevitable washings from baby blow-outs and spit-ups. I've rounded up a few of my favorites to help you get started building up some winter essentials–or just choosing a great gift for a baby in your life!
An adorable pom hat
Ok, the first essential on our list has definitely got to be an adorable pom hat, because what baby doesn't look ridiculously cute in an adorable pom hat?? I love this hat that Elks & Angels sent to me because it's super warm for the long winter months, luxuriously soft, and my almost four-month old daughter looks so sweet in it. (Plus, the big kids get a kick out of giggling whenever she wears it.) This version comes in pink, yellow, or blue so you can go gender-neutral or totally spoil your little one.

Perfect wool mittens
Anyone who has ever had the good fortune of trying to fit gloves on any small child under the age of five knows what an impossible task it is. Which is why I am grateful to the good people of Polarn O. Pyret, who carry an affordable line of Merino wool mittens that don't–I repeat, don't–require any sticking of any fingers in any holes. Just pull these mittens over your baby's hands and you're good to go. Phew.

Super warm booties
I'm an extremely weird person because I loathe wearing socks of any kind, and it's a trait my children have (unfortunately) inherited. The second they step into anyone's house, off the socks go. But my husband is constantly worried about our baby's feet being cold and I have to say, in the interest of keeping those baby tootsies warm and not having to worry about constantly losing tiny socks (because you know it will happen), I would take these classic baby booties for the win–they are warm enough to wear outside and double as indoor slippers. Win-win.

A warm jacket
Although those onesie body suits are an essential if you'll have baby outside in a carrier or for any long period of time, they are also not practical for quick trips, as you don't want to have your baby get overheated or have too much bulk in the car seat. This versatile puff jacket is a nice option for a jacket that will keep baby warm and have more layers added for extra protection outside (although you always want to avoid using jackets in car seats). And I may or may not have included it because it also happens to be on sale for more than half off. Ahem.

A pair of warm tights
OK, as the mother of three daughters, can I just say how ridiculously hard it is to find warm winter tights? My oldest daughter wears a uniform to school and I spend about half of my life searching for tights that can hold up to her playing outside and keep her warm enough without feeling like snow pants. I finally got a chance to try these tights from Polarn. O. Pyret and they are brilliant. They are a little bit more than I would normally spend, but the quality is unbeatable. And they have perfect sizes for babies–with plenty of time to order a pair for those holiday pictures.
