5 Tips For Flying While Pregnant

As a national speaker for a non-profit organization, I've done my fair share of flying across the country. And the great majority of my frequent-flyer miles have been logged while, of course, I've been pregnant. Probably because I am seemingly always pregnant.

And although I will admit that sometimes it is easier to do the traveling before having to worry about also lugging around the stroller, and my nursing cover, and all the sundry items that come along with traveling with young children, flying while pregnant can be its own unique challenge.

The swelling, the aches, the hunger, the bathroom breaks—here are a few tips I've picked up over the years to have a happy and healthy pregnancy flight.

Wear compression stockings

Perhaps it's not what you want to hear, but allow me to put on my nurse hat for a moment (the old school white cap kind, of course) and tell you that if you're anywhere past your first trimester, compression stockings are a great idea. Not only will they help reduce the swelling that will inevitably accumulate in your lower limbs, but they will greatly reduce the risk of a blood clot on those long flights as well. You can pick up a pair online from the Maternity Sock Shop

Pack a bigger pair of flats

It should go without saying that you will be wearing flats (right?!), but my little tip is to buy a cheap pair of portable flats one size up that you can swap for the flight and/or right afterwards when your feet will inevitably be a little bit more swollen than usual. (Despite even the compression stockings.) Nothing is more uncomfortable than trying to get off the plane and jamming your feet into suddenly-too-small shoes!

Board at the last minute

You may be tempted to rush onto the plane and get settled, but it's definitely been my best experience to wait to board the plane until the end; that way, I can ensure that I do the all-important task of visiting the restroom one last time before I am strapped in for hours on end, because, really, who wants to use the airplane toilet while preggers?

Always, always have a snack

Airport food is the worst, and yet, whenever I fly while pregnant, I am always starving beyond all belief. To prevent myself from giving into temptation and ordering the cinnamon roll that's bigger than my head, I try to pack plenty of healthy options in my carry-on to keep me full. Granola bars, plain almonds, and string cheese are some of my favorites. Along with plenty of bottled water, of course.

Soothe with peppermint lotion

Peppermint lotion is my #1 pregnancy flying essential. I can't tell you how worn out a long flight, especially if it's overnight, makes me feel when I'm pregnant. My feet always take a beating from miles walked in terminals and swelling galore (you just had to put your seat back didn't you, Mr. Business Man?). But the minute that I can, I revive my tired tootsies with some peppermint lotion—and the difference is incredible. The peppermint lotion on my feet soothes and somehow refreshes my entire body. Ahhh …
