5 Real Resources to Help You Make Money from Home
Thursday, December 31st, 2015
One of the most common things I get asked from new moms or moms who have had a few babies is how to get started working from home.
A lot of moms have found success in network marketing business, such as all those Beachbody programs or any of those skin care, essential oils, or other product you've been asked to go to a party for, but personally, I've never found those to be my jam.
Although, just to be clear, I do consider those legitimate businesses as well and applaud any woman who puts forth effort to make an income that works for her and her family, I also understand the hesitation with using some of those types of programs. For every one woman that succeeds, there are usually a few behind them who have failed, and it can be hard to know if you'll be one of the success stories or just someone who succeeds in getting all of their friends to avoid them so you don't try to sell them something.
I get it, and if you're looking for a different option, here are some real options for making working from home work for you.
Start a blog
I've always been skeptical about blogging for money because I've never been able to pull it off, but then I came across two bloggers, Becky Mansfield and Paula Rollo, who are actually incredibly transparent about exactly how much money they make from blogging and how they make that money.
It's astounding, really, how successful they have been. In their July 2015 Income Report, for example, on just one of their blogs (they have several), Becky made over $36,000 dollars. Yup, you read that right. They offer so much advice it's hard to even know where to begin, but I can say that I have read their book, Blogging On The Side, which is a good practical baseline to help you get started making money from a blog. I've already implemented a few of their strategies for my own personal blog!
Become a TaskRabbit
TaskRabbit is a website that connects people who are needing odd jobs done to people willing to do those jobs. People can use it for anything from running errands to doing housework, so it would be easy to offer services for a job that you can get done with kiddos in tow.
Obviously, you need to be careful with this one, but I've been able to find a few odd jobs here and there using Craiglist, such as doing research for an author or helping with a study.
Develop a product
The easiest way to make money from home is to develop a product that you can sell at your own rate and pace, allowing you to set your own hours and income goals.
For example, one blogger who I really admire recently launched a jewelry line at Madre Beads that features chewable (think: teething baby) beads that moms can wear without worrying about chemicals. She's had a lot of success in developing a product that can be sold rather than simply trading dollars for hours.
Become a virtual assistant
I'm fascinated by the world of virtual assistants, often dreaming about being able to afford one for myself, but they are part of a growing market that will only get larger, and if you're organized, resourceful, and love spending time in the digital and social media worlds, I suggest you get yourself to a Virtual Assistant program and start promoting yourself.
