Moms-to-be are often overwhelmed with lists of things they need to buy for their newborns, and I can attest to the fact that half the stuff I did get for my firstborn was really a waste of money. I thought I'd learned my lesson with my second son, but I still ended up with more unnecessary things than I had intended.

Now that I have 3-month-old twins, I have only purchased things I know I need and that have proven to be essential to everyday sanity!

Here is my list of 5 must-haves for twin moms. (This list does not include essentials like car seats or a crib, of course.)

Twin nursing pillow

Whether you plan to breastfeed, bottle feed, or do both, a twin breastfeeding pillow is essential. There is no way I could nurse my twins simultaneously without it. It is easy to strap on, comfortable for me and the babies, and it has a washable slip cover.

I cannot live without it.

Even if I'm breastfeeding just one baby, I usually have the other on one side so he or she can be close to me. It reduces a stressful situation when I'm feeding one and the other one is crying his or her head off. It's also great to use to cuddle both babies at the same time, especially when they're bigger. If you buy only one thing, make it this — the My Brest Friend Twins Plus Deluxe Nursing Pillow.

Double electric breast pump

Feeding two is a big task, no matter if you're choosing to breast or bottle feed. My double electric breast pump saved me when my twins were in the Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) for the first two weeks (they were born at 34 weeks). For them to thrive, they needed breast milk.

Because I couldn't be in the NICU all day to nurse them, I pumped enough milk for two for 24 hours and using a double electric breast pump saved me a lot of time and effort. Having expressed breast milk on hand is great when you have twins, as your partner or other family members can take over the feeding occasionally. The Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump is one of the most popular choices.

Microwave sterilizer

With pumping, there is a lot of washing and sterilizing. Save time with the Phillips AVENT Microwave Steam Sterilizer. It's easy to use, and it only takes two minutes to sterilize everything you need.

Bouncers

I love our bouncers! They are perfect for putting your babies somewhere safe when you need to do something (like take a shower), and the ones with vibration mode are great for soothing a fussy child. When you have two and your arms can only hold one, the bouncer is the way to go. We have these Fisher-Price Baby Bouncers.

Double stroller

I don't need to tell you that a double stroller is a must-have! Before you buy, consider the following: How and when will you be using the stroller most? Are you using it to get some exercise in, like take walks every day, or even run with it? Do you prefer a side-by-side stroller (consider the width of your doorways!) or a tandem one? What's your budget? Is it lightweight and easy to collapse and fold? All said I like the Joovy Scooter X2 Double Stroller, suitable for newborns and upwards.
