5 Crazy Awesome Camping Accessories For Families

My husband is currently obsessed with the idea of taking our kids camping this summer.

He is dreaming about recreating the adventures he had as a camping family when he was younger and I have to admit that there are some real appeals to getting outside and getting into nature as a family.

Waking up to a gorgeous sunrise, getting away from screens for a real recharge, and the memories that can be made only through spending time together, may just convince me that camping is a good idea after all. And if that doesn't work, these camping accessories that make getting outside easy and fun might just do the trick too.

Fold'n'Go Travel Bassinet

If you're brave enough to go camping with a baby, you'll need one of the portable bassinets in your life. And I think having one of these around would be great for the warm summer months, even if your “camping” is happening right in your backyard.

Portable Highchair

My sister-in-law has one of these and in addition to using the high chair for camping, they easily stash it in their car for family parties, outdoor barbecues, and traveling to grandma's house. It's so incredibly handy to have around! Also, this option for a high chair that converts into a regular chair and has a shade attached to it would be an even better choice for only $20 bucks more, but it's currently out of stock. But it's worth waiting for, if you can get your hands on one.

Hiking Backpack

A hiking backpack is essential if you're going camping with a young infant or toddler who can't walk very far. In fact, I use our hiking backpack all the time even at home, for a hefty toddler who was too large for a traditional carrier. (I had to get my vacuuming done somehow, right?) We scored ours at a garage sale and saved a lot of money, but hiking backpacks are designed to last a long time, so investing in one is a great idea. This version from Toys r Us is under $130 and features lumbar support and a sun shade canopy to shield your little one.

Bike Trailer

My husband fondly recalls that whenever he and his family went camping, they biked from their campsite to take day outings or get supplies. And although he totally complains about the one time his mom made them bike 20 miles, biking is obviously an essential component of transportation when you go camping.

If you have young kids in tow, a bike trailer will save everyone a lot of hassle getting where you need to go, because kids love hanging out in these things. We just received this Burley bike trailer to try out for our family and I swear, this trailer alone is all my kids need for a “camping” trip–they would probably just sleep in there if I let them. Bottom line, if you're going camping or plan on spending anytime outdoors, you need a good, quality bike trailer (and this one converts into a jogging stroller and even a sled too!)

A camping coffee maker

If this isn't #1 in the world of camping with kids, I don't know what is. You could easily brew up coffee in a french press, but this camping option is indestructible and compatible with all K-cups.
