I fully admit that I loathe the work of putting sunscreen on my kids. With four wriggly bodies to try to chase down and apply sunscreen on, I am thinking of basically just avoiding the sun all together this summer. Add in the fact that my kids are all incredibly fair-skinned and I want to give up before the summer heat has even started.

But sadly, hiding away in the shade forever probably won't work, so I'm prepping myself mentally now for the task of coating them all in sunblock. But I'd really love to make sure there is a good balance between safe options for my kids to play in the sun. If your baby is over 6 months, which is when the FDA recommends you should start using sunscreen as opposed to simply keeping your baby in the shade, you might want to try one of these all-natural sunscreens:

The first sunscreen I looked up was the Honest company sunscreen and sadly, the Amazon reviews (and accompanying pictures!) were enough to scare me off. I just don't want to risk it. But a lot of people recommended the BurnOut kids sunscreen instead as a more natural option. According to the product, this sunscreen is:

  • Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, chemical-free, paraben-free, petroleum-free, and PABA-free

The Thinkbaby brand was also highly recommended on Amazon and has an almost 5-star rating. I like this option because it offers SPF 50+ protection, which is good for very fair skin. The active ingredient, like most sunscreens is zinc oxide, along with: aloe barbadensis leaf juice, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), capric caprylic triglycerides, cranberry seed oil, dimethicone, hyaluronic acid (made from vegetables), hydrogenated castor oil, jojoba oil, magnesium sulfate (epsom salt), methyl abietate (pine wood resin), papaya, olive oil, polyglycerol-10 laurate (vegetable glycerin), raspberry seed oil, sorbitan stearate (coconut based), sunflower oil, and tocopherols.

I'm a little confused by why this company advertises this sunscreen as “gluten-free” because you're not exactly supposed to eat sunscreen, but the ingredient list still passes my no “-ates” list. (No sulfates, etc., which are the worrisome chemicals for babies and everyone, really.)

The ingredients in this sunscreen are: Grape Seed Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides (from Coconut Oil), Organic Beeswax, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Shea Butter, Stearic Acid (from Palm Oil), Purified Water and the sunscreen is SPF 30+.

I'm guessing living in Australia would mean you would know a thing or two about protecting yourself from the sun. This version, meant specifically for babies, is made with 10% Zinc Oxide and 5% Titanium Dioxide and is Paraben-Free, Fragrance-Free, and Chemical Free. G'day mates.
