4 Clever Ways to Save Money on Maternity Clothes

I love maternity clothes as much as the next pregnant lady. Those full-belly panels, those forgiving stretchy shirts, and the bathing suit that I shouldn't have been able to fit into but somehow managed.

But what I don't love is spending tons of money on maternity clothes. Having gone through four pregnancies, I still am squeamish about spending a lot of money on what I will only need for a few months.

And while I think it's important to make sure you have at least one super-cute maternity outfit that you can feel good in during your pregnancy, I'm also all about being a smart maternity shopper. If you're anything like me, or just prefer saving up for all those cute baby clothes, try out these tips!

Buy used

Of course, it's not a novel idea to buy used maternity clothing — it only makes sense when maternity clothing gets worn for such little time. But to make things even easier, you can try your hand at buying some gently worn maternity clothing online from stores like Belly Go Round. They even have a brand-new section, and you can sell your clothes back as well. Smart shopping, indeed.

Mom-to-mom sales

Unlike garage sales, mom-to-mom sales are just like what they sound like — moms selling stuff to other moms. With targeted sales, you can know that you are getting products that you will actually need, plus you have the benefit of hearing from real-life moms about what works and what doesn't work. You may discover a really nice brand of maternity jeans for short legs, for example, or nab that belly-support system that everyone's been talking about. Browse your local paper or Google “mom to mom sales” in your area to find one.

Just ask

Don't be too proud. If you're in need of maternity clothes, try asking around. I got tons of maternity clothing for my first pregnancy from a few friends, and it saved me so much money. And now, having gone through the rounds of pregnancy clothes myself, I know that I'm only too happy to give out my clothes. I'm glad that they will be put to good use if I'm not using them! Plus, it saves friends/family the hassle of going through their clothes and donating them, so you may just be doing them a favor.

Follow your favorite brands and companies

To score some big-ticket items, like dresses, coats, or support wear, try following your favorite brands and maternity clothes companies online and through social media. By commenting on one of my favorite bloggers' Instagram posts, I was able to enter in a contest to win a maternity belly-support shirt, and I won! I got a Blanqi tank that retails for over $70 — totally free!

My mom was excited about my pregnancy and went out shopping to surprise me. She showed up at my apartment with three bags full of clothes! She got most of it at Goodwill, but she got a few really nice things from Kohl’s, too. I found that the maternity jeans were my favorite thing in the world, and maternity pants in general are awesome – even before you really start to show! Goodwill was great though for extra clothes – especially lounge clothes for around the house. I’ll wear my boyfriends t-shirts when I want to be REALLY lazy (which is more often than I should probably admit). Even at 34 weeks, I still get away with wearing some of my own old t-shirts and stuff though, so that’s awesome!
