17-yr-old Dancer Rushed to Hospital, Discovers She’s Pregnant and in Labor!

Jodie Smith, 17 years old, was an active and avid dancer suffering from stomach pains. As the stomach pains grew increasingly painful, her mother rushed her to Pontefract Hospital at 1 a.m.

“Once at Pontefract Hospital, doctors quickly discovered Miss Smith was pregnant and in labour and transferred her to Pinderfields in Wakefield, where she gave birth in the early hours,” according to this article.

Jack Author, whom midwives suppose was a “couple weeks overdue and certainly full term,” was born weighing a healthy 8 pounds on July 23. His young mother never had prenatal care and never knew or suspected she was pregnant. Jodie routinely danced and worked out. “She hadn't put on any weight … and looked just as slim all the way through.” Jodie and the baby's 19-year-old, shell-shocked father still plan on attending college. (She will study dance.)

I believe her mother, Mrs. Smith, was probably as shell shocked as the newly young mother and father. Mrs. Smith said, “I was in the supermarket at 6:30am buying baby stuff, because we had absolutely nothing.”

“They're all really pleased, but a bit overwhelmed at the moment.”

There have been past news stories telling the same tale of the un-suspecting woman who learns of her pregnancy as she goes into labor, like Elizabeth Whitehead, the unsuspecting 21-year-old woman who gave birth to a preemie in her front lawn. And Trish Staine, the 33-year-old “marathon mom,” who was unaware of her pregnancy until severe back pain (aka her beginning stages of childbirth) attacked post workout.

Is it really possible for a woman to not know she's pregnant until she's in full-blown labor?

According to this Slate article, “Yes, but it's rare. … [Only] a very small number of mothers make it to the labor stage without finding out they're expecting.”

I still find it hard to believe that it's possible for a woman to not know. I felt like I knew I was pregnant with my first child before I was even far enough along in the pregnancy to test positive. I took numerous tests before the first positive result appeared, and all along, I felt like I just knew my daughter was already within me.

What do you think?

When did you KNOW that you were pregnant? Right away, after a positive pregnancy test, or were you further along before learning of your pregnancy?

I definitely think its crazy for a woman to go all the way thru a pregnancy and not have one sign or symptom! I think woman who claim to not know they were pregnant maybe didnt want the pregnancy and its a good way being able to say wow I didnt even know… Definitely far fetched you didn’t have any knowledge of pregnancy!
