I Spent Months Deciding on a Name. Guess What I Call the Baby Now?

Parents spend a lot of time coming up with the perfect name for their child. If you're like me, you consider things like how it will sound with their last name, how easy it will be to spell or pronounce, and how unique or common the name is. I spent a lot of time with my husband choosing the perfect names, but when my babies arrived, I rarely used their names.

Instead of using their names when I needed to get their attention, I found myself using nicknames. I have a few for each of my children, including LeLe, Bean, Chicken, and Bubble, and I began to wonder if I was the only parent who did this.

So, I asked my friends on Facebook if they have nicknames for their children and if they refer to them more by their real name or not. Here's what they had to say:

Flea

“Felicity is Flea, and Jackson is Fella. I tend to use their nicknames more than their real names. I never really did that with Grace or Lily.” — Jenna

Bella

“I call both my kids Love once in a while. But mostly, I use their full first names. My 3-year-old daughter, Isabella, prefers we call her Isabella — not Bella! So funny! Although our extended family calls her Bella.” — Aimee

Bug

“Bug and Monkey. They definitely hear their nicknames more than their given names because even their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins use their nicknames.” — Cassie

Olive

“We call Olivia, Olive. I only call her Olivia when she is in trouble, and when she is in BIG trouble I call her Olivia Newton-John.” — Christina

These are so cute! We have a Han or Hanner Nanner (Hannah) who was Bug when she was a baby. Red (Victoria. Betcha can’t guess how she got that nickname. Ha.). Mads or Madman (Madden), and Jackman (Jack). We do call the boys Bubba or Mr. Man at times.

We use GiGi for Giovanna, bubba or G3 for Gary, bubby for Gavin and juju b, peanut, Poopachu for Giulliette. I love Nick names I think it’s more fun!
