My Pregnancy Week 5

Brought to you by
Pregnancy Week 5

Even though this may be the first week a home pregnancy test confirms your pregnancy, it is incredible how many changes your little one has already gone through. By week five, the embryo, now securely nestled in your uterine wall, will begin dividing into three layers of cells: the ectoderm, the mesoderm, and the endoderm.

The top layer of cells is called the ectoderm. The neural tube, which will eventually form the spinal cord and the brain, will begin to develop this week. Skin, hair, nails, and sweat glands will all develop from this layer.

The most impressive changes this week take place in the middle layer, called the mesoderm. Though your baby is only about the size of a grain of rice, the heart has divided into chambers and will begin pumping blood this week! Muscles, cartilage, bone, placenta, and the umbilical cord will also all develop from this layer.

Your baby's lungs, intestines, thyroid, and pancreas will eventually develop from the endoderm.

  1. Grace says:

Hi everyone, I love reading everyone’s comments. I was late for my cycle so I took a test this morning and I’m pregnant. According to my phone app I’m due October 5th,2019. I had 2 miscarriages last year and have had high blood pressure since my last born child, so I am a wee bit worried. My husband wants no more children too.

    • Megan Klay says:

Congratulations!!! Have you made a doctor’s appointment yet? I’m sure they’ll be able to support you in regard to your high blood pressure. Hopefully your husband will be accepting and excited anyway since baby is already on board. Best wishes!!

  2. Tahamedur says:

such an honest, truthful post. It’s so true, I felt the same way that I was super conscious of the baby inside me and luckily i don’t *think* i did any damage to myself. I think, for me, stopping running at 35-36 weeks and waiting 7 weeks to run and easing into it super, super, super slowly has helped. I did experience some leaking at first post-partum, but it has basically gone away now. I hope next time we can cheer you on to take a break from running (if that’s what you decide!) I know I’ll always be here to cheer you on and support you, no matter what you choose to do!

  3. fghdty says:

Hello, I am a first time mom, and will be turning 34 years old in a week! My last period was 5/28/2018, which means I am 5 weeks pregnant already, very exicted, hoping for a girl 🙂 since i was pregnant, the only things i felt was a very gassy belly and bloated belly, just cant sit too long, feeling very uncomfortable !

  4. Aubree says:

I’ve been gaining a lot of wait like I look like I’m 10 weeks pregnant and I’m only 5 and u used to be skinny every time I eat I never gained wait before I was pregnant but sum how when I got pregnant I’m only 5 weeks but look like 10

  5. Elizabeth says:

  6. Myoma says:

On my second pregnancy and this one makes me feel tired and nauseatic too.. Praying that all goes well and we finish the 12 weeks..

  7. Becca says:

hi , every one 🙂 , I’m 5 weeks and its a complete surprise, , 5th baby though . we are having to keep it to ourselves as my partners mum died suddenly last week and I realised I was late, so we did home test and three tests (all positive) later we are booked in and confirmed , I’m not getting a lot of pregnancy symptoms but then I never do really , I just need to stay as stress free as I can which is not easy when we have a 2 week wait for the funeral.

  8. Jolene says:

Hi everyone, I am 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and this is my fifth pregnancy. I have had two beautiful daughters who light up my world everyday, I had a son stillborn at 17 1/2 weeks and a miscarriage three months after that. My children are special to me as I have always had to do fertility treatment to get them. I am so worried right now and I try so hard not to stress and worry but I still do. I would like to know if anyone has any advise for me. I go for my first sonogram on Thursday and I pray that I can see those precious little heartbeats.

  9. Shannon says:

This is my second pregnancy but it’s been 11 1/2 years & I can’t remember much from the last pregnancy other then vomiting every day until the second trimester. Anyhow I have some concerns & am unable to get to the Ob until Jan 7th, I have been having mild cramping on & off through the day for the past several days (I’m 5 weeks 1 day along)
plus I’m now running a low grade fever between 99.1-99.7 I am worried because I heard a fever could mean miscarriage but I don’t have any bleeding or even spotting of any type. Can someone on here please give me some input. Btw I am going to Urgent Care tomorrow morning just for some piece of mind (I can’t go now because I don’t drive & hubby works 2 jobs 11-8pm then 9pm-1am at the second job)

  10. Carol says:

I’m new I feel really awkward I’ve come on here to ask for a bit of help my last period was the first of November 2014 and I has sex on the 8 th of November and the 14th of November now I’m 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant but I’m wondering what day I fell pregnant 🙁

  11. chelsee says:

This is my first baby! I am married to my babies father. I am 21, and he is 25. I am really hoping for a boy, ugh! but either way I am so excited and ready for this journey. I am so nervous and scared but I know everything will be okay! I quit smoking a week ago (thank gosh) and now I’m just preparing myself and getting ready I just wanna do everything right and the correct way! Blah, any not first time moms have advice for a first time mommy! P.S. I have the worst fear of giving birth, the pain freaks me out, how do I get over that?

    • samantha says:

Well first off, congratulations! I am a mommy of 3, and 1 on the way (last one for me) and every pregnancy was just as exciting as the firat. It is wonderful that you stopped smoking. Seems you already are on the right path. I wouldnt stress too much about not knowing what to do, jt really does come naturally. And any questions y I’ll i have, there are plenty or places to find answers to them. As for the labour pain, well, there is medicine for that. It does hurt, but its a different kind of pain to me. The contractions are a pain in the butt. But breathing thru them and not getting all worked up really does help. As for the baby coming out, the pushing to me is exciting because you know your baby is on its way. ( and it feels like you are trying to take the biggest b.m.) the “ring of fire” as people call it is when the head is crowning. But it dnt last too long and isnt really all too bad. All in all, everybody experiences it differently, but if you go in with a clear mind and dont panic or over think everything, it wnt be as horrible as you are expecting. And again, they do have mesicine to help wase it. Good luck! And plz keep us posted

  12. Letitia says:

I’m 18 I iust found out I was pregnant two days ago I’m five weeks an six days an I’m exited iive had a lot of misscarriages so I’ll be happy to get through this with my boyfriend an hopefully we can get evrything started now

  13. Sara says:

Hi, I’m Sara. I’m 33 and this is my second pregnancy. I have a nine year-old daughter so I’m pretty much starting over. I’m five weeks now, I took a test the day my period was due because I just had a “feeling” and my test was positive. I knew for a whole week before I told my boyfriend because he was out of town and I wanted to tell him in person. Since he found out, he has been really distant and quiet. I suddenly feel like a lepper and feel very alone. I’m sure he’s still processing the information but it would be nice if he asked me how I was or even kissed me. It’s very depressing.

    • jessica says:

I know the feeling about starting over. I’m 27, this is my 2nd pregnancy, and I also have a 9 year old daughter. I was the same way about having the ‘feeling’ of being pregnant only after 2 days of missing my period. sorry to hear about your boyfriend.. but u are probably right, he is probably trying to process it all. it’s a lot to take in. i am no longer with my boyfriend, so I’m doing this all on my own, with the help of my mom. just trying to stay positive is all u can really do.

  14. Elisa says:

Hi i’m Elisa, i’m 18 and this is my first pregnancy. I’m around 5 weeks pregnant. I didn’t know I was pregnant until today! I’m so excited but scared because sad to say my menstruation isn’t normal every month, I never expected I would be pregnant and because of that I have been drinking alcohol and taking in random over the counter medication for colds that have been coming and going lately. I just want to know if this would affect the development of my baby at this early of a stage. Does anybody have any advice?

    • Megan Klay says:

Hi Elisa – Congratulations on your pregnancy! This happens to many women whose babies turn out perfectly fine. Don’t stress yourself; as this isn’t good for baby either! When you do go in for your first appointment with your OB, discuss your concerns with them so they’re aware. Best wishes for a happy and healthy remainder of your pregnancy!

I’m 36 and pretty much shock

  17. Louise says:

I’m 36 and I am going thru a lot more than ever. I need help with food in my local town of Santa Maria California. I live in uninhabitable house and no one in my town will help me. My husband was in a traumatic accident that left him with a broken leg. A paramedic vehicle ran him over. Can anyone help.

    • Megan Klay says:

Hi Louise – There should be services in your town or state which can help. Also, is your husband receiving any financial support from the ambulance company who ran him over? Best wishes to you and your family.

      • akeya says:

  23. Nicole says:

I lost a baby to no heartbeat at 9 weeks just 2 1/2 months ago… Super devastating…. and am pregnant again. 5 weeks. Every tinge of a cramp and every bout of morning sickness I live in fear. As excited as I am, I am also very nervous. 1st Ob appointment in 2 days. Please pray for me!

    • Brittney says:

I completely understand how you’re feeling. I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks in 2010. I am now 5 weeks, and every cramp I get make me so nervous. I’m just praying for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. I will pray for you, as well. Stay positive!

      • Myoma says:

Hi there, if you get cramps at week 5 can that mean that you will get a miscarriage? You got me nervous..

        • Megan Klay says:

Hi Myoma – It can, but it can also be implantation. If you start to see bleeding, please contact your doctor. Bleeding can also be a sign of implantation, but it does not hurt to contact a medical professional and discuss your symptoms with them. Best wishes!

    • C says:

      Been there, Done that…
So difficult. Here’s hoping this little one sticks and is strong!
