Tips for Pregnancy Week 31Brought to you by
You've Got That Glow: Photographing your work of art in progress.
If you have friends who already have kids, you've probably seen some maternity photos. The unbuttoned shirt with a swell of belly showing, or the interlocked hands around the growing bump are two of the token images that celebrate the pregnant form. Maternity photos can be a great keepsake to remember a significant life change.
To find a great maternity photographer, ask for recommendations from friends, or search through photographers from your area. If you had a photographer that you loved who took your wedding pictures, you might ask if they take maternity shots, or know someone who does. Some photographers even offer packages for maternity and newborn shoots. You should be able to find photographers at various price points. Make sure that you consider their session fee and their portrait pricing when determining what you can afford.
A good time to schedule maternity pictures is when you are nice and round, but the swelling hasn't set in. Usually the beginning to the middle of the third trimester is a good time. Keep in mind that if you schedule your shoot for 38 weeks, you might just go into labor at 37 weeks. This could happen anytime, but the longer you wait to do pictures, the more likely it is that something could happen before you get them done.
If you don't have the cash for pricey portraits, you don't have to miss out on the maternity photo bandwagon. Maybe you have a friend that just purchased a great, new camera and wants to try it out. Volunteer to be a model! You can also get your husband/mother/sister/friend to take some images of you. This is one of the instances in which something, anything, is far superior to nothing. You'll treasure being able to look back at yourself. You'll love being able to share these first images of your child.
Tips for getting great photos:
- Use natural light. A flash can make things look harsh and washed out. Take your photos outside, during early morning or late afternoon hours, when the sun is lower in the sky.
- Simplify. Don't feel like you need a fancy wardrobe, or a lot of props. Just a beautiful shot of you in profile can be the most meaningful image.
- Make it a family affair. Include all the members of your family. Fathers, siblings, and even the family pet should make an appearance. You want a snapshot of who you were, and what life was like at this moment. Let everyone share in the joy!
