My Body – Pregnancy Week 21

Pregnancy Week 21

How are you feeling? By week 21, your hormone levels have probably stabilized, which means more stable moods throughout the day. How are your legs feeling? Most women have gained about 10-15 lbs by week 21 (some more, some less). As your body continues to pack on the pounds to support the growth of your little one, you may notice that your ankles are sore, you have some cramping in the legs, or you have developed varicose veins. All of these discomforts, thankfully, subside after pregnancy. Below, you will find some tips to deal with any aches and pains you may be feeling in your legs.

Support Hose – Put them on first thing in the morning to help deal with varicose veins and swelling during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Support Belt – Wear this throughout the day to help deal with edema or discomfort in the ankles or legs.

Stretching – Stretch about 10-15 minutes every day. Remember: Don't push yourself too hard, it shouldn't hurt! A nice gentle stretch will go a long way.

Pregnancy Pillow – Elevate your legs on a pregnancy support pillow when you relax at night, or when sleeping. This will increase circulation in your legs, often relieving varicose veins, cramping, and edema.

Since I changed my diet completely to nothing but healthy foods, I’ve lost all the pre-pregnancy weight and I’m extremely healthy. I have only been gaining baby weight. Before I got pregnant I was at 145lbs, I’m now down to 120lbs from no sodas or junk food.

so far ive gained only around a pound, but with my growing tummy, and increased awkwardness with moving and such, it feels like soooo much more!!

  5. Marilyn says:

    Good luck to everyone 🙂

  6. Try sleeping on your left side as it provides more oxygen to baby.

  7. I was a size 6 before pregnancy. I have gained over 20 lbs…. Well me last pregnancy was 80 lbs total. I am vegan as well… Due to my placenta at a low position it is difficult to walk a long time. Well I pray to get moving and leave the carbs alone.

Kate I’ve got the problem sleeping @ nyt I sleep for an hr/ 2 then be awake but I have gained weight. I’ve got a pain in my stomach that’s like an ulcer & I don’t know what’s the cause my Gynae told me it’s the supression of my intestines caused by the baby growing inside. What more can I do cz the minute it attacks I use Gaviscon & it’ll take more than 2hrs to be better

Due to your growing belly it is often advised not to lay on your back for long periods of time (which make it hard to breathe). Even though this position seems to be the most comfortable for me (lol) it doesn’t last long at all. 🙂

  10. Kay says:

I’m starting to have trouble breathing when I lay on my back. It’s getting more awkward to get up and turn over as well. I guess it’s just downhill from here!

  11. Shannon says:

ive only gained six pounds. but i feel like a horse!

  12. Kate says:

I’m just starting to have trouble sleeping. I haven’t gained a lot of weight yet, (only 9 pounds) but a belly wedge and/or pillow between my knees really helps.

  13. McKenzie says:

When I lay down I will put a pillow in between my legs while I relax or sleep.

  14. SammysMOMMY says:

I have noticed that separating my legs with a blanket when I lay on my side has helped me get more comfortable!
