While these conditions don't always occur together, the presence of any three of these risk factors can lead to a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, according to the National Institute of Health.

Metabolic syndrome means the patient has an increased risk for cardiovascular problems, according to the American Heart Association. According to the National Institute of Health, a person with metabolic syndrome is two times as likely to develop heart disease and five times as likely to develop diabetes as someone who doesn't.
