MaterniT21 Plus: Non-Invasive Fetal Genetic Testing

iStock_000016692030SmallAccording to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a little more than 3% of babies born in the United States are born with a birth defect. Of that 3%, Down Syndrome is the most commonly found defect. Women, on average, visit their doctor 10 to 15 times during pregnancy, and because any of those times are options for genetic testing, you can now have the MaterniT21 PLUS test performed.

The anxiety of knowing your child has a birth defect ahead of time isn’t ideal during the already stressful pregnancy experience.

As opposed to other genetic tests that are invasive and considered relatively high risk procedures, MaterniT21 PLUS is nothing more than a blood test. This test looks specifically for fetal aneuploidies within chromosomes 13, 18, and 21.

An aneuploidy is a condition where there is an odd number of chromosomes within a cell. Humans have 46 chromosomes per cell, so any total of chromosomes that is more or less than 46 would be considered an aneuploidy because of the amount of cells, and fetal because the measurement is taken from the fetus.

The MaterniT21 Plus test only attempts to detect aneuploidies within chromosomes 13, 18, and 21 because they are the most common chromosomes to have an aneuploidy. While Down Syndrome is the most common problem that comes from an aneuploidy, Triple X syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and Turner syndrome are complications that can be tested for.
