Focusing at Work When Conception is Taking Over Your Mind

If you can’t focus, try doing something to clear your mind. You could take a break from the work that requires more thought, and switch to a more mindless task, like organizing files. Playing a quick game of solitaire or watching a funny video online can give your brain a rest, allowing you to come back to your work with more focus and attention.

Fresh air and exercise will reinvigorate your body and send oxygen-rich blood to your brain, which can help you focus.

If doing something mindless doesn’t stop you from thinking about conception, take a break and do something challenging. Complete a crossword or Sudoko puzzle, or read a chapter of a thought-provoking book. If you occupy your mind with a pleasant task, you may be able to regroup, re-energize, and refocus enough to get through your workday.

Sitting in front of your computer trying not to obsess about conception can be stressful and tiring. Try taking a walk outside, or at least away from your desk. The fresh air and exercise will reinvigorate your body and send oxygen-rich blood to your brain, which can help you focus. Getting enough exercise before and after work can also help you remain focused and alert throughout your work day. It will also help with the stress some experience when trying to conceive.

If you are the type of person who likes to talk out a problem, make a quick phone call to your partner or a friend or family member who knows you are trying to conceive to briefly discuss whatever thoughts you can’t get out of your mind. If you can’t call someone, write down whatever’s weighing on your mind. Sometimes just getting the words out can be enough to help get the thoughts out of your mind. Make sure you have great emotional support after work hours. Freely discussing your excitement and concerns about conception outside of work can help you to be more focused during the workday. Good luck!
