Eating Right With Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis patients are at a greater risk of osteoporosis, so getting enough vitamin D in their diet is crucial. Vitamin D can be obtained from being outside in sunny weather, foods such as broccoli, and through vitamin pills. Bone strength can also be improved through strengthening exercises such as jogging, weight lifting, etc. Other essential nutritional needs are calcium, essential fatty acids, iron fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), salt, and zinc.

Sufferers of the disease often need 20-30% more calories than those without it, and as a result, many patients with cystic fibrosis do not eat as much as their body needs.

Ten to twenty percent of people with cystic fibrosis also have diabetes. This can make things more complicated, but with proper health precautions and management of the condition, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Cystic Fibrosis-Related Diabetes (CFRD) is usually treated with insulin and requires regular checks of blood glucose levels. Failure to manage diabetes and cystic fibrosis effectively can lead to many problems, including kidney problems, blindness, and bad blood circulation.

The most important thing to remember when feeding a child with cystic fibrosis is that he or she needs to eat regularly. Kids and teens with the disease often don’t feel well enough to eat full meals, but ensuring that they have consistent eating habits plays a huge role in supporting their health with cystic fibrosis.
