Color blindness is nothing to be worried about; it is not a symptom of some worse condition. However, children may still have issues with their self-worth or sense of intelligence if they struggle with color blindness.

Does your child often mix up colors? Does he have trouble matching objects of the same color? Does she color leaves purple and grass red? If your child does any or all of these things, don’t assume it's a learning disability. He or she may have some form of color blindness.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, about 10% of men are color blind to some degree, while color blindness is much less common in women. But despite what it sounds like, every person who is color blind isn't destined to live a life completely devoid of color.

Rather, most people who are color blind see colors that are simply less vibrant or distinct from one another, according to Colblindor. Most people who are color blind are red-green color blind, which means they can’t tell the difference between green and red, according to Everyday Health. Only in very rare cases do color blind people not see any colors.

How can you tell if your child really is color blind? It is most often inherited. Is there a history of color blindness in your family? If your child inherited her color blindness, it is unlikely that there is any way to treat it.

Color blindness is also sometimes caused by certain drugs, according to Everyday Health. If this is what's causing your child’s color blindness, changing prescriptions might help.
