Why Ellen and Portia de Rossi Aren’t Having Kids

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are arguably one of the most famous lesbian couples in Hollywood. Ellen has a hit talk show and de Rossi has a starring role in the most anticipated rebirth of a comedy show Arrested Development. In addition, Ellen is an extremely generous celebrity who gives thousands of dollars to families down on their luck and showers her audience with gifts during her popular 12 Days of Christmas shows.

Even with their mutual success and happy marriage, it looks like the pitter-patter of feet will not be coming to their house. In a recent interview with Out magazine Portia talks about the rebirth of the hit comedy Arrested Development and about whether or not the couple plan to have children. She says, “There comes some pressure in your mid-30s, and you think, ‘Am I going to have kids so I don’t miss out on something that other people really seem to love? Or is it that I really genuinely want to do this with my whole heart?’ I didn’t feel that my response was ‘yes’ to the latter. You have to really want to have kids, and neither of us did. So it’s just going to be me and Ellen and no babies — but we’re the best of friends and married life is blissful, it really is. I’ve never been happier than I am right now.”

I am a huge believer that whomever wants to have kids should. I do not care if you are single, married, infertile, gay, straight, or lesbian; I would never judge any person’s desire to have the kind of joy I experience on a daily basis with my own children.

On the other hand, I also totally respect when a woman says, ‘You know what, I don’t want kids.’ Kids are hard, draining, and time consuming. You devote yourself to at least 18 years of putting someone other than yourself first and it takes a huge commitment. Having kids is not for everyone and I think it is great that as a couple they are unselfish enough to realize having kids is not for them. Every child should be brought into this world because they are deeply wanted, not because society thinks every couple should procreate.

Do you judge people who choose not to have kids?

Children are not for everyone. There is nothing wrong with that. They can take better care of each other this way.

I say good for them for knowing what they want and sticking with it. Some people just don’t want children of their own and that’s fine! You do what is best for you 🙂

  4. I love both Ellen and Portia and they have an AMAZING relationship, and their choice not to have children is exactly that their choice. God Bless both of them

  5. choosing not to have them when you don’t want them is right. why have a child that isn’t going to recieve all the love and care from parents who want them? and why make a person miserable and then make the child(ren) miserable?
