When Your Whole Family Has a Stomach Bug: How to Deal When Everyone’s Under the Weather

There’s only one thing messier than a toddler with a stomach bug- a whole family with a stomach bug. While just the thought of your whole family coming down with a stomach bug at the same time can turn your stomach, if you’ve got little ones there’s a pretty good chance that, at some point or another, it’s going to happen to you. Before it does, take notes on the tips below to ease the pain!

Call in backup

If you’ve got back up, now’s the time to call them in. Whether it’s grandparents willing to take one for the team or a nanny who has an iron stomach, calling in backup to help you take care of your sick kids while you’re sick is never a bad idea.

Triple-sheet the beds

When everyone’s sick, you should expect a mess. One of the easiest ways to prepare for a mess, and to make clean up way easier, is to triple-sheet everyone’s bed. Make up each bed three times over and, each time, arrange a layer of towels or a waterproof pad between the sheets in the spot or spots that are most likely to get dirty. When you’ve made up the bed multiple times, you can simply pull off the dirty layer to reveal clean sheets each time someone makes a mess.

Find a doctor who does home visits

While not all cities have home visiting doctors, most big cities have seen a return in a trend of doctors who make house calls. Ideally, before anyone gets sick, get the number of a doctor who will come your way in the even of a whole family sick-out. Not having to toss the kids in the car (and then clean car seats when they inevitable toss it while riding in the car) is a real lifesaver when everyone is down for the count. If this isn't available, look into online appointments where you can use technology to get face-to-face with a doctor without leaving the house.

Bunk-up

While triple sheeting everyone’s beds is a good first step, if you and your little ones are sick at the same time, you’re probably going to want to find a way to sleep in the same place. Bring cots for your little ones into your room, or an air mattress (triple-sheeted of course!) into theirs so you can stay close while you’re all ill.
