Where There’s a Will Ferrell There’s…His Three Kids

So as many of you know, this past weekend was the Emmy Awards. Luckily for the injured eyes and weakened stomachs of those that saw such a wholesome and spectacular performance by the Artist Formerly Known as Hannah Montana on another awards show, Will Ferrell decided to treat viewers by making a more family-friendly appearance. On Sunday evening, Will Ferrell presented the award for outstanding comedy series with some special guests: his three boys.

Usually when you see stars out with their kids, they look pretty dang posh. When Brad and Angelina step out into the streets, their kids are dressed from head to toe in GQ-worthy attire (GQ meaning, Gradeschoolers Quarterly, of course). But in this case, Mr. Burgundy and his kids looked like a dad and his three goofy boys.

Despite being in raunchy comedies and consistently outlandish at times, I realized that Will Ferrell is just like any old dad.

Despite the dialogue between the bunch being completely scripted, watching the boys’ apprehension in walking out to center stage brought a sense of realism to Will being a dad. If you saw it live on Sunday, or you find your way to YouTube, little Axel, who’s just 3 years old, walked out to center stage, clad in his rain boots and armed only with a blanket,  shielding himself from the eyes of Hollywood behind his brother Mattias.

These boys, just as quirky and awkward as the next, put on a display that brought Will Ferrell down to earth for me a little bit. Despite being in raunchy comedies and consistently outlandish at times, I realized that Will Ferrell is just like any old dad. He has to deal with three boys, and I can only imagine the varied personalities housed in their little bodies. He has to take them to school, to soccer, to birthday parties, and to whatever else an elementary-school kid could be involved in. Rather normal really.

We often toss aside any redeeming qualities that celebrities may actually have but, the truth is, underneath all of the usual pomp and circumstance, they're just like us.  Will Ferrell bringing his boys to the big show added a few cool points to an otherwise quirky, outlandish persona.
