What Makes You Happy Right Now?

what-makes-you-happyI tend to think that being happy is not supposed to be a prolonged sense of being, but more like a collection of moments. Just like eating whatever I want gets boring after awhile, I definitely think that being happy all the time would have the same kind of effect – I would eventually find myself looking for things to bring me down so I could pop open my umbrella and dance again.

With all of that being said what collection of moments puts you in your “special place?” What is it – outside of motherhood – that gives you joy?

This summer I plan to live intentionally by noticing and collecting the things that make me happy. Last week I tried to live in each moment and weed out the things that I do just for “me” and all the rest of it. I absolutely hate grocery shopping and laundry, so that was off the list. None of them are “me” time and I find no joy in them except crossing them off my list. Now, vacuuming? That’s a different story. Vacuuming is my favorite domestic chore and that makes me a very sick woman.

In no order whatsoever, here are the incredibly self-indulgent things that I enjoy:

Driving around in my car with the music set to deafening
Some people get their ideas in the shower, some get them when they are about to doze off, and then there’s me: I get my ideas driving around with very cheesy and incredibly loud dance music pumping through my speakers. I rarely get to drive alone, so when I do – it’s a party.

The foot and/or hand massage part of the mani/pedi
It’s the best! Hands down (and that pun was intended). The one thing I do for myself on a fairly regular basis is have someone else paint my nails. My feet are absolutely essential because, no kidding, I can’t do them myself – I have weird toes. But forget the end product, the three-to-five minutes of massaging my hands during a mani or my feet during the pedi are heavenly.

A good story
A few weeks ago I was yearning for a good story rather than the oodles of non-fiction books I had been reading, so I went to the book store and browsed. No matter how much I love the instant gratification of downloading a book to my iPad, there is nothing like walking into a book store and finding a treasure. It took me three days to read A Land More Kind Than Home. It was amazing in all the ways a story should be: you never want it to end and feel a bit lonely when it does.

Pinning
Once I whittled down my follows on Pinterest to people that only highlight funny and creative projects that weren’t perfect or overwhelming, I liked pinning again. In fact, I took about two hours last week and re-organized my boards. This is also completely self-serving because I’m moving halfway down the eastern seaboard from Philadelphia to Atlanta and I need a lot of inspiration to make our new home comfortable, eclectic, and awesome. Once I realized that I shouldn’t take Pinterest so seriously it became a happy place filled with possibilities instead of overbearing perfectionism.

It’s okay to be self-indulgent sometimes and share the corny things. So what makes you happy right now?
