What Has Been YOUR Biggest ‘Surprise!’ Expense Since Having Children?
When we were preparing for daughter #1 I did all the reading I could on what to expect that first year; and since I am a budgeter, a lot of that reading revolved around what we’d need to buy and how to save on what we would need.
I knew around how much it would cost for a pack of diapers, and of course we shopped around to find the big stuff, like a car seat and stroller. I read tips on how to cut back on these expenses, which can add up to around $10,000 that first year. I clipped coupons and comparison shopped and I signed up with specific companies so I could get extra savings when I bought their products.
In all of that, though, I’d have to say our biggest surprise expense became diapering! I knew the cost of diapers. I signed up for coupons. I bought in bulk to save.
I didn’t realize, though, how many of those suckers we’d go through in a typical day! I grossly underestimated how often I would change a diaper those first few months, and we ended up spending nearly a third more on diapers than I anticipated.
So much for planning!
Now, maybe I was overzealous when it came to changing diapers. Maybe I went through more than necessary in an effort to keep baby’s bottom dry. Still, I believe overall I used the ‘normal’ amount, or at least close to it; it’s just that the amount I used turned out to be higher than I expected.
What about you? What was your biggest surprise expense when it came to having a baby? The expense you might have known you’d have but didn’t calculate correctly? And how do you save money on that expense if you are still paying it?
