Wanted: Dream Nanny

my-future-baby-nanny-1

My husband and I are super blessed in life, in particular with our careers. We both work for a great company (hint: you’re on our website right now!), doing jobs we enjoy, surrounded by our wonderful family members. Don’t get me wrong, we work hard, and quite a bit, but we wouldn’t trade this opportunity in for anything. Since we work with family and our business is about family, we’re all a bit more flexible and understanding about kid-related well, anything. With our first-shot-at-TTC deadline quickly approaching (yes, we have a deadline) I have a lot on my mind, childcare included!

I mentioned to my manager, who is also strangely enough my sister-in-law, in our weekly meeting yesterday that we will need to discuss in the not-so-distant future what we will do with my workload since I plan to cut back on my hours after having our baby. In addition to my work commitments , I’m hoping to still be able to go to my twice-a-week yoga class, run, bike with friends, really just stay pretty active post-baby because I freaking love to work out. And I’m not going to lie; I still hope to have a little time just for me.

But what all should my nanny do? Care for my babe, for starters and primarily. What type of person do I want, trust, need to have caring for my child while I am not? A lot of what I want is not assessed on paper – whether on my want ad or on someone’s resume – it will absolutely be more of a feeling. Who do my husband and I and our baby connect with? Who seems most interested in our baby and our parenting? Interviews will be mandatory, a test run babysitting gig will probably be best, oh and do you mind if I’m peering at you through a nanny cam the whole time? It’s not that I don’t trust you, it’s just that, well, I don’t. Not at first. It’s my first baby and I haven’t even met him/her yet but I’m already considering you. As one of the biggest influences for my baby in his/her formative years aside from the hubs and I, you are a big deal.

On paper what do you look like? Well, my dream nanny, I hope you are:

Bilingual, specifically Spanish-speaking. We live in Colorado, and in a world where Spanish is the second most spoken language (not behind English, but Mandarin). Plus it will open up doors for my baby. Not just for his/her far future career, but for his/her ability to learn. Babies’ brains are like sponges and the more you put in early, the more they’ll be able to hold!

With a Nursing background or attending school to become a nurse (pediatric nurse is a bonus!). I got this idea from my other sister-in-law. She lucked out with two great nannies (who are also sisters!) who work part-time as nurses and part-time as her nanny. Brilliant!

Plus you are willing to do light housekeeping. I have to tell you, I’m torn on this one! I worked as a nanny and did quite a bit of housekeeping for the family. Honestly, I got burned out on it pretty quickly. I don’t love cleaning my own home, let alone someone else’s! Also, it became more difficult to fit in as baby’s naps became shorter.

I’m hoping you would be willing to pitch in with dishes and baby’s laundry. Anything beyond that would have to be whatever you’re willing or have the time available to do, and I would want to check in frequently, since your primary focus should always be on my little one.

You also share an interest in natural/green living. I’m a hippy; I admit it proudly. I hope to cloth diaper, make my own baby food, continue to make my own cleaning products, and then some. We’ll need to have someone that is supportive of all that business, bonus if you live this way yourself! (Did I mention I live in Denver? This hopefully shouldn’t be too hard…)

You embrace an active lifestyle. My husband and I are both super active people and hope to incorporate our baby into this, rather than having it be a part of our pre-kid lives we no longer have time and  energy to continue. A nanny that likes to get outdoors and run around and play with the kiddo will mean we’re not skipping a beat.

And you’re willing to be with our baby in our home while we’re here working. We are lucky enough to each have our own offices, mine the actual office and my hubby’s in his man cave AKA our basement. We don’t plan to be hovering over your shoulder, but we’d love to be able to pop in and say hi to you and the babe every once in a while!

And of course, it wouldn’t hurt to know that you’re patient, kind, loving, caring, thoughtful, and appreciative. You are also smart, not a total pushover, and many more things I haven’t even thought to look for in a nanny yet. It may sound like a lot to ask, but this is my baby we’re talking about here and I want nothing but the best for him or her. We have big stuff in store for you, whoever and wherever you are. We can’t wait to meet you!

What would your dream nanny be like?
