In a horrifying accident, Usher’s 5-year-old son nearly drowned while swimming in the family pool. According to reports, Usher’s son Usher Raymond V was swimming in the family pool while being supervised by his aunt. He spotted a toy near the bottom and dived down to retrieve it. Unfortunately, the drain cover was missing and his arm became stuck.

Though his aunt tried to save him, she couldn’t release his arm from the drain. Two workers freed the boy and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Pools, in general, and with my children, make me very nervous; and pool safety is something that I think many parents don’t give enough attention to.

Sadly, during the summer months, news of drowning, or near-drowning, is something that becomes a daily part of life, because I live in Florida. Pools, in general, and with my children, make me very nervous; and pool safety is something that I think many parents don’t give enough attention to.

Pool safety is not just about teaching your child how to swim; it is preparing your child to deal with that unexpected gulp of water when he or she is in the pool, or being vigilant enough to check the pool for dangers beyond just the water.

Sadly, pool accidents happen in just a second and taking your eyes of your child – even for one second – may result in disaster.

In fact, just today, while swimming in the pool at my sister’s house, my nephew went under for just a second without anyone even noticing. There were four adults in the pool and another adult outside the pool and we all thought everything was fine. Though he knows how to swim, he was taken by surprise by going under and was pulled out by his dad, who thought he was fine when he went down.

I just encourage every one of my reader’s to research pool safety and be proactive when around water with your kids.

What measures do you take to protect your kids in the water?

What do you think?

I’m.a little nervous about my parents house in FL. They have a pool that is basically connected to the house. They like to leave their extra large sliding glass door always open. I know they will keep it shut but still scary.
