The Only New Year’s Resolution All You Pregnant Mamas in the House Need

If you're pregnant, you may have been seeing all of those “New Year, New Me!” type posts floating around out there and feeling a little conflicted. Maybe they are inspiring you and you’re out there in the world making lists and resolutions and pinning healthy meals and you’re hitting the gym and you’re living your best new year life.

And hey, if that’s you, I say more power to you. But if that’s definitely not you, can I also just say:

More pregnant power to you.

Because the truth is, if you’re pregnant coming into this new year, this may not be your year to conquer the world. This probably won’t be your year to get into shape, meal plan more, meal prep more, travel more, accomplish more, or even save more money. And that’s OK.

If you’re pregnant, your New Year’s resolutions will probably look a little more something like this:

Less healthy eating, more just being grateful to be able to eat to get through the morning sickness.

Less exercising to get a “better” body, more exercising for the joy of still being able to move (because the 9th month mark is looming, folks).

Less doing, more dreaming of holding that little one in your arms.

Less planning for the future, more learning to live in the moment.

Less trying to do more and be more and accomplish more, and more being OK with being exactly where you are right now.

Because the time will come for all of those things. The time will come for you to work on your fitness and your healthy eating and your big goals. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will be easy to sit back this year and feel like you’re watching as the whole rest of the world gets organized and starts purging their entire house thanks to that tidying-up show on Netflix while you barely have enough energy to munch your saltine cracker so you don’t start dry heaving again — trust me, I get that. I hate feeling unproductive and I hate feeling like I’m not contributing anything to the world.

In the throes of first trimester sickness especially I start wondering if I will ever be anything more than a giant sloth who gets exhausted simply by ordering groceries. I start panicking that I’m the worst mother in the world and how the heck will I be able to take care of this baby when I can’t even make it through a shower without throwing up? I forget everything about what it was like to actually have energy or goals or ambition and am reduced to my own little literal baby bubble. I become convinced that this pregnancy was a terrible mistake and what have I done and my husband is going to hate me for the lazy creature I have become.

And of course, New Year’s only makes that feeling worse.

But no matter where you might be in your pregnancy, you can’t forget one important thing: you are being super productive, even if you can’t manage to drag yourself off the couch. You may not look like you’re doing much, but you’re accomplishing plenty 24/7 — you’re growing eyeballs and fingers and limbs and a brain and a freaking human being. You’re doing plenty already, mama, and the best thing you can do for your entire family is make sure that you are rested and healthy and if that means being just a little bit lazy and a little bit selfish and a little bit more tired than normal right now, then so be it.

Pregnancy is not forever, even though it can feel like it.

This sluggish, tired person who really has no idea where she’s heading or what she wants out of life other than to make it through the end of these 9 months somewhat physically, mentally, and emotionally intact and ready to handle whatever your pregnancy is throwing your way is not you forever. You will emerge from this pregnancy fog eventually. You will actually want to do things and put on pants again, I promise.

So until that time comes, just make yourself this one New Year’s Resolution: be kind to your pregnant self, because you’re doing just fine.
