Tips to Motivate You to Get the Kids Outside (Even Though it Gets Dark So Early)
In the winter, it can be hard to want to play outside. But this is made even more difficult because it gets dark outside so early! Here are a few tips from real parents on how to get your kids outside, even though it gets dark so early.
Get a dog that HAS to be walked! (Both the dog and the kids will benefit from the outside time and this guarantees you'll make it out a few times a day.)
Go on a hunt with flashlights. The kids won’t even question what you’re “hunting.” They’ll just love running around with flashlights! You can stay in the backyard or walk around the neighborhood. Either way, it’s a blast! You can also try this with a lantern or a headlamp.
Try not to stop at home first. Stopping at a park on the way home from somewhere (work or daycare or whatever) before you have the chance to get comfy and lazy at home makes it easier to commit to the idea of going outside. Some kids just get a kick out of swinging in the dark. And you can try a different park each day to make it more interesting!
If it’s snowy outside, you can rotate writing (stomping out) secret messages for the rest of the family to read in the morning.
Again, if it’s snowing, you can shovel the snow you have left into your sandcastle bucket and made snow castles! A fun way to turn your yard into a little fortress. And you can add tiny snowmen to guard the castles!
