The Story Behind Olive Barrymore Kopelman’s Name
It can be one of the most frustrating and lengthy choices when pregnant, choosing a name. The name choice came relatively easy for Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman.
When on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week, Barrymore revealed, “I was reading a book with my husband. I was three months pregnant, and they said, ‘Your baby is the size of an olive.’ And that was it. We never looked back.” Barrymore went on to talk about how easy baby Olive has been, calling her “a definite ambassador to having lots of babies.” Her reason for this idea that her daughter is an “ambassador” was explained further. “I have met babies who are screaming and they’re crying and they’re trying to convey all these things, and you get so terrified and overwhelmed. I’m very grateful to her. She really has it together … She’s really impressing me,” she said.

In comparison, Olive is a relatively normal name up against some celebrity baby names such as Moxie CrimeFighter, Diva Muffin, Pilot Inspektor, and Petal Rainbow Blossom. Alternatively, they could have gone with the name Hashtag, like the Jameson family or Facebook, the name of a boy born to an Egyptian family.
I will admit I had a pretty easy time picking my children’s names, and they are pretty traditional names at that. With our first, I knew without a doubt that if it were a boy, he would be named after my father (well actually my father’s middle name). With the next two children, we basically drew straws and my husband won naming rights for both. I had veto power, but I really loved the names he picked. I think naming my children was one of the most terrifying aspects of pregnancy, I mean they will be stuck with this name for the rest of their life, what if they hate it?
