The BEST Advice for Mom by Mom

Women talking, their children playing

Recently on my Facebook fan page, I put out a question to the moms: “What is the one piece of advice you would give to new moms, or what is a piece of advice you wished that someone had shared with you early in your mothering career?”  The responses, which were plentiful and from a variety of mothers, seemed to echo one fundamental chorus of maternal advice.

So what was the best advice that one mom could offer another mom?

While worded in many different ways, what other moms want you to know is that YOU GOT THIS!  Mom-wisdom runs deep within your veins.  Your intuition is there for a reason.  You were divinely designed to mother.  Trust yourself and your decisions. And most importantly, remember that YOU know what is best and what works for you and your child.  Follow your own heart and raise your child with YOUR vision.

In a world that offers a plethora of books, web-casts, websites, parenting classes, and ‘new and improved’ ways of doing everything from potty training to talking to your teenager about dating, mothers are being led away from intuitive parenting.

We are now taught to get a second opinion.  To use another method.  To choose our words more carefully.  To calculate our responses.  To get advice or ‘help’ from perfect strangers.  To research.  To listen to doctors, specialists, and everyone else on the face of the earth – who may ‘know’ what your child needs.

What we are not reminded of nearly enough these days, is that we are enough.

What we are not reminded of nearly enough these days, is that we are enough.  That we know our children, and that we have ideas, thoughts, plans, and dreams, are capable of making decisions, and have methods for handling our kids that may be against the new-age grain of parenting handbooks.  So what!?!  Different doesn’t mean wrong.

If you have seen the movie Parental Guidance then you know exactly what I am talking about here.  And while some of these ‘new ways’ of child rearing are definitely beneficial and helpful – our number one tool exists within ourselves.  Our hearts and our minds and our intuition and mostly our LOVE for our child.

When you hear that little voice inside your head that says, “My child is not feeling well,” or “My child is not happy,” or “My child’s behavior needs attention,” or even, “There is something wrong with my child,” you need to stand at attention and listen.  Find out what it is that gives you that unsettled feeling, and stick with your gut.  Chances are YOU are right.  Sure, the doctor may think you are crazy – and plenty of people will be willing to point out where they think you are going wrong.  Let them think what they want.

According to MOMS – the best advice is to trust yourself.  Remember – YOU GOT THIS!  Even if you sometimes feel like I do – like nothing is working – and worry that you are making a total mess of things (your kiddos) or creating future psychiatric patients – YOU GOT THIS!
