I love holidays: the decorating, the festivities, the multitude of reasons to make crafts, and – of course – a reason to satisfy my sweet cravings with fun desserts.

The girls and I love to create things together in the kitchen. These are three fun and delicious (and did I mention inexpensive?!) tasty treats we serve up on the 4th. You can make them, too, with your kids, or share in the comment section other ideas you use for the holidays!

1. Yogurt Parfaits. Healthy, nutritious and inexpensive, yogurt parfaits make the perfect snack or sweet treat any day. You can spruce it up for the Fourth by creating a red, white, and blue sensation in small glass (or plastic) cups. For the littlest of party goers, consider using plastic cups – you can purchase fancy but inexpensive ones at the dollar store.

To make you will need strawberries or raspberries, blueberries, plain or vanilla yogurt (plus honey if using the plain variety). Place a layer of strawberries, a layer of yogurt, a layer of blueberries, and repeat for the red, white, and blue pattern. Top with a layer of whipped cream if desired. To make this super festive you can even put a small flag on top!

2. Fruit platter with dip. While I love sweets, for the most part I want my kiddos munching on fairly healthy fare. We create a fruit platter each Fourth for this reason. It’s easy and inexpensive, and pretty similar to the yogurt parfait above except for the presentation. This is a great party platter, too, because it can be made very festive!

To make you will need watermelon; strawberries and/or raspberries; bananas and/or coconut; blueberries; yogurt (vanilla or plain); cinnamon; and honey. Purchase a round plastic platter from the dollar store (clear is fine, or even red or blue for the occasion). Slice the fruit and layer around the platter in a red (watermelon and/or strawberries), white (bananas, coconut), and blue(berries) fashion. Create the dip by mixing the yogurt, cinnamon, and honey to taste. To make this super fun for the kids you can make a large batch of dip and purchase small shot glass sized cups at the dollar store; fill the shot glasses with individual dips. Place skewers nearby and help the kids make ‘fruit kabobs’ and then dip their kabobs in their own individual dip. (Coconut may not skewer, but they can be dipped solo!)

3. Let them eat cake! Of course you may want something really sweet for the holidays, so consider making a rectangular sheet cake. Separate a container (or two, depending on the size of the cake) of icing into three separate cups. Let the kids add food coloring to two cups: a red and a blue. Stir. Put the icing on in a red, white, and blue pattern. Use small flags (dollar store) on top of the cake. Place a “4” candle in the middle to signify the holiday. For those who don’t like to use artificial dyes, use white across the entire cake and then arrange strawberries to the left of the cake, leave the middle of the cake with icing only, and place blueberries on the right side of the cake. (You might want to use angel food cake if you create more of a ‘fruit’ cake.)
