Summer Bucket List: 30 Simple Ideas Just for Moms

Pulling pajama-ed knees to chest, I sit back in my chair. It rocks in the way that still surprises me, even though we’ve had this patio furniture for quite some time.

I wrap my fingers around my mug and breathe in the coffee, this morning, my family.

Jason sits across from me with his coffee and his iPad, his happy place. Brody swings. Chloe slides. Kayli picks flowers. Our puggle, Louie, found the closest slice of sunshine to us, and sleeps fitted inside it.

A pile of breakfast dishes sit by my side, I’m blissfully – and almost successfully – ignoring them.

It’s cold enough that our kids are in jackets and our coffee is extra loved and appreciated, but still — we sit outside because the calendar says we’re skating the edge of summer, so these are the brushstrokes we’re painting.

S’mores, fishing, and movie Nights.  Ice cream for dinner, bike rides, and the longest possible days at the pool. Homemade lemonade, a garage sale, and pajama walks.

As I sit back in that surprising chair, I think of the fun that the kids and I will puzzle piece this summer. I secretly adore having them at home, letting go of schedules, making fun breakfasts, and changing from pajamas to swim suits then back into pajamas.

That’s one side of summertime mothering.

The flipside, is that I lose a bit of me in those long days of ‘together'.

It doesn’t ever feel like there’s quite enough time in all of that fun, to carve out a slice of sunshine to fit inside.

Except for this year, I’ve decided that that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Here’s how.

The kids and I create a yearly Summer Bucket List – the things that will make our days go round, the fun to be had, the rules to be broken. We promise ourselves that joy, it’s written in crayon, and we make sure it happens. Each item gets crossed off one by one, in shaky (colorful) print.

This year — on the very next sheet of notebook paper — I’m making my own bucket list, for me. A promise to take care of myself, to find my sunshine, to feed my soul. It might be written in ink instead of crayon, but it’ll be just as set in stone and I plan on crossing each item off my list, one by one. I’ll even use colorful ink.
