Should You Give Your Child a Sibling? You Be the Judge

Just recently, Leah Campbell, a blogger that publishes on Mom.me, posted a piece about a friend of hers who is a single mom and has only one child. For a reason that I still can't seem to understand, people decided to enter into her personal life decisions and comment on Campbell's friend's situation, and how her child needs a sibling. (People just need to mind their own business.)

Campbell defended her friend's choice to forego providing a sibling for her daughter by saying this: “[Her daughter] doesn't need a sibling any more than I need another child.”

That's a terrible comparison.

She also said this: “Whether or not a child has a sibling is not the defining factor for the type of person they will become, and no child needs a sibling. You know what kids need? Love, support, guidance, food, shelter and maybe a little more love. But a sibling? That's about as crucial to development as a puppy [is].”

Yeah, I agree that children need love, support, guidance, food, and shelter — that's an absolute given, but all of those things are necessary for any living, breathing human, so to narrow it down to children is incorrect. But whether or not a child has a sibling ABSOLUTELY is a defining factor. Maybe not the defining factor, but siblings play a massive role in how children turn out.

Children have to learn to share their things; they have to learn how to communicate; they have to learn how to fight and argue; they have to learn how to love and care; and when they've got four other people that they spend every day with, they can hone those skills.

But with all of that being said, Leah and her friend are more than free to make their own decisions. I personally believe that siblings are necessities. I know people who I think really could have benefited from being raised with some siblings of their own, but that doesn't make them any less of a person or any less worthy of my attention — it just presents some challenges that could have been remedied through living with siblings.

But what I believe is irrelevant to Leah's decisions and to her friend's decisions. They are responsible for their own families, so they have the right to judge what's best for them and their child(ren).

What's your opinion on siblings? Are they important? Are they just as helpful as a dog like Leah thinks? Let me know!

I have no brothers or sisters and i swear you it’s so sad! My daughters have no uncles or cusins, I have no nephews or nieces, no brother or sister in law… We have no family! Think about Christmas and look at an empty table, just food and no one around! Think about anniversary days… So sad, so empty! No one to call out… So yes, you should give your child a sibling!
