Sherri Shepherd on Motherhood, Diabetes, and Plan D!

You might know Sherri Shepherd as a comedian, co-host on The View, and actress. But did you also know that she is a loving mother, a dedicated wife, and suffers from Type 2 Diabetes? In her latest book, Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes (Even If You Don’t Have It), she teaches us how to reevaluate our relationship with food and find true health (and happiness!).

Sherri’s story isn’t about spending a lot of money on expensive gym memberships and gourmet chefs, nor is it about finding that extra time to work out. “Extra time” just doesn’t exist for us mothers! She wrote about the little things she did along the way, which resulted in a more than 40 pound weight loss and a new attitude for life.

She’d always been diagnosed with pre-diabetes; but to Sherri, that just meant she didn’t have diabetes yet. Even though she felt a tingling in her hands and feet and was always going to the bathroom, and her vision would sometimes get a little blurry, she’d simply say a prayer to God, saying “Please make it go away and I promise to eat right,” and then she’d go get a Big Mac.

I spoke with Sherri about the day she was officially diagnosed with Diabetes, and she recounted the special, eye-opening moment that started her journey. She said that while she was sleeping, she had a vision of her young son, Jeffrey.

She said, “He was crying because he wanted to know where Heaven was, because that’s where everyone said Mommy was. And that was the thing that made me turn my life around. I couldn’t do to my son what my mother did to me, which was leave us at a young age. Nobody is going to take care of my baby the way that I would.”

Sherri is now much healthier – and a kale fanatic! She is thankful and excited that her son is following in her footsteps, eating vegetables and making exercise fun.

“When you’re breaking up with your boyfriend, kale isn’t going to cut it. I know that,” she said. “But always try new things, and eat them in new ways. We sautéed kale with garlic and peppers, and it was really good! And we made it into a salad with dried fruit and mango dressing … I love kale now!”

She also spoke of her exercise routine.

The key is everybody can’t go to the gym. But you can make your home into a gym. When I’m doing laundry, I take it and I do squats and lunges from one side of the house to the other. And my son laughs at me for lunging across the kitchen. I do push-ups against the counter. And I have a contest with Jeffrey. We make it fun to work out. We race up and down the stairs. It’s great exercise!”

Her advice for other moms who want to exercise more often?

Go to the park!  “Don’t sit on the bench and yell at your kids to play on the monkey bars – get up and climb the monkey bars with them! If you like to dance, put some salsa music on and grab your husband. Dance around the house with your husband and children for 30 minutes!”

In her book, she shares how to reevaluate your relationship with food and learn to forgive yourself. Sherri counsels you on how to become your own best friend and motivate yourself, instead of tearing yourself down.

At the end of our conversation, Sherri left me with one last bit of brilliant advice.  She said, “We always say we would die for those we love. But are we willing to live for the ones we love?”

For Sherri, her Diabetes diagnosis wasn’t a death sentence; it saved her life.
