Shakira Posts Baby Picture on Charity Site
Shakira and her boyfriend Gerard Piqué wanted the world to see their newborn son, Milan Piqué Mebarak. However, instead of lining their own pockets with photo spreads from gossip rags or exclusive shots sold for a ridiculous amount of money, they went about it another way.The couple who welcomed their son on January 22, 2013, posted the first photo available of him to their UNICEF webpage.
They want their fans to see their son but they also want to help the less privileged. The couple said in a statement, “We hope that, in his name, other less privileged children in the world can have their basic needs covered through gifts and donations. Thank you for sharing this unforgettable moment with us.” The photo depicts the cute newborn receiving a kiss on the cheek from his father. Fans can donate from $5 to $110 in Milan’s name to help UNICEF. UNICEF was founded in 1946 to help governments improve the health and education of children and their mothers.
I think what the couple did was fantastic. It has always left a bad taste in my mouth to see celebrities paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for the first pictures of their children. While these celebrities have chosen to be a part of the limelight, it seems wrong to sell your babies image for a big paycheck. For celebrities who want to share their joy, what new parent doesn’t, donating the money or setting up a site like Shakira and Gerard did, not only lets you see their children, but also allows an organization to continue to do good things. Now some people may say I am being hypocritical saying that couples who pocket the money are worse than a couple who wants a donation to see a picture of their child, but if they can lend their celebrity to an organization to do some good, I say more power to them.
What do you think about their choice?
