Save Money on a Gym Membership By Trying these Fitness Tips
If there’s one thing I don’t have extra of, being a mom with young kids, it’s expendable income. (Extra weight, diapers, snotty noses? Of those I have plenty!) Between feeding, clothing, diapering, and educating my three young kids, my wallet is a little lighter than my mid-section. I’d love to join a gym with a child-care, but it’s just not in the budget. But I didn't want to have to use the “I just had a baby” excuse until my kids were in college! So here are a few things I've found that I could do to stay fit and stay in budget!
Work out with your kids- This includes everything from soccer in the backyard to “airplane” rides. Kids don’t know you’re using them for weights; they just love the airplane game, and my kids are always willing to play for a longer time than I am. I can’t even tell you how many times we've gone to the park to see kids playing, and what do I see? Parents on the benches with their cell phones! Play at the park! When was the last time you tried the monkey bars? Upper body strength? Check! Toys you need to pick up off the floor? Always! Instead of crawling around on your hands and knees to wrangle the toys, try lunges and squats instead. These are simple things that can be worked in without even having to change your daily routine!
Get familiar with your community- For me, nothing is more boring than running on a treadmill. Where am I going? I feel like a hamster in a wheel. It’s just not for me. But, I am so lucky to live in a beautiful area with great bike paths and hiking trails, some of which I didn't even know were there until I made it a point to find out!
My community also has a free recreation league. Each season, there are opportunities to join a team, whether it be for volleyball, basketball, or even a yoga or Zumba class. My community's recreation league is run on money that I've already spent in taxes, so it’s like wasting money if I don’t take advantage of the programs. Why let my tax dollars go to waste? (Well, at least that’s what I tell my husband when I leave him with the kids on Wednesday nights for volleyball!)
Don’t let budgetary restrictions be the reason you’re still wearing maternity pants! Get moving with your kids, and have free fun doing it!
