How To Replace Your Coffee Habit During Pregnancy

Are you a coffee lover?

I am, too. That is, unless I'm pregnant.

When I'm not pregnant, I live for the stuff—for the soothing ritual of grinding and measuring, scooping and pouring in the morning. For the aroma that reaches my nose before my brain is even fully awake. For the hot steam that rises and that delicious, delicious first sip of coffee mixed with real cream.

I love coffee at all times of the day, looking forward to a little “afternoon delight,” if you will, when my children may or may not be sleeping, and I can sneak away for a little moment of re-centering, just me and my coffee.

But when I'm pregnant, the sad truth is that coffee takes on an entirely different place in my life.

I can't stand it.

It starts almost instantly from the moment I find out I'm pregnant. The nausea rolls in, the smell seems to cling to my clothing and make me sick, and horror of horrors, the taste is all completely off.

I fight it. I cry, because really, besides my family, there is nothing that brings me more happiness in the world than the perfect cup of coffee.

But sooner or later, I have to resign myself to the fact that for the next nine months, the perfect cup will simply not be filled with coffee.

And I try to change it, really I do. I tell myself that it's all in my head and it tastes fine and how silly to think pregnancy could change my taste buds in such a bizarre way.

I've even driven myself to Starbucks, fighting off rolling nausea, and forced myself to order a coffee, so much is my desire to bring back my love for the bean.

But for whatever reason, I just can't. When I'm pregnant, coffee simply makes me sick, and it doesn't taste the same.

So how can you learn to replace your coffee habit during pregnancy, if you, like me, experience the sad condition of can't-stand-coffee-while-pregnant-atosis?

1. Switch to tea: And not just any tea; for some reason, there's something about the the hot cup of liquid that affects my nausea. So for me, this pregnancy has been all about the iced tea. Peach tea, sweet tea, regular tea—any iced tea soothes my stomach and satisfies my craving for a go-to beverage.

2. Try decaf: On those days when I have sipped the bitter brew, I have noticed that my morning sickness goes up through the roof. But if I sip a cup of decaf, for some reason, it doesn't cause me to get as sick later. Perhaps it's the caffeine content that matters, but decaf can make a difference.

3. Think of it as a “detox”: Detox diets are all the rage, right? So now here's your chance to rid your body once and for all of all that dependence on caffeine in your morning cup. You will come out stronger, clearer, and healthier at the end of this pregnancy. Or you might just spend it dreaming about that first delicious cup when your taste buds return to normal…

  2. Thank you for putting into words my feelings about coffee exactly! I can’t wait until I enjoy it again! This is my second pregnancy and same as the first, I just don’t want it, or anything that resembles it. Hot cocoa is about the closest I can get. Water with lemon seems to be my new drink of choice – I guess thats a lot healthier 🙂

I’d switched to hot choco and tried to enjoy the milk as replacement.
