Parents Talk: How I Knew My Baby was Growing Up

The first year of a baby’s life often feels both maddeningly slow and furiously fast. While the nighttime feedings, endless diaper changes, and hours upon hours of colic may seem to pass slowly, most parents gasp at least a little bit when they realize that a year has passed and their baby, the one who was swaddled and tiny just a moment ago, is now aware, communicative, and growing up every moment. While many parents take a few moments to appreciate how far their little one has come on the day they turn one, there are also often lots of other little moments when parents realize that their baby is growing up. We checked in with parents across the country to find out when they realized their baby was growing up- check out their answers below!

“I realized that my daughter was growing up when she suddenly stood up and started walking. I couldn't believe it because she hadn’t even started cruising yet so I thought I had more time!”

Zadiya

“When my baby started peeking at what I was eating, and then started gooing and gaaing and waving opening his mouth every time I [took a] bite, I realized that it wouldn't be long before he started eating solids along with nursing. For some reason, knowing that he would have something other than my milk in his tummy almost made me cry!”

Meg

“When my son started popping the snaps on his 12-18 month clothes even though he was only 9 months old I knew he was getting big and growing up fast!”

Asha

“The first time my son threw a fit, I knew he was growing up and getting closer to being a wild toddler than a newborn baby. Up until then I could take something from his hands gently and he wouldn't put up a fuss but this time, when I tried to take my phone from him he grabbed it back, started fussing and crying and wouldn’t let go at all!”

Colleen

“My baby daughter has always been in the low percentiles for height and weight but growing like she should. I knew she was growing up when another baby that was her age but much bigger tried to take her shovel when she was digging and she hit him right in the face. Of course I told her no and will teach her not to hit but in some kind of way I was proud that she could stand up for herself.”

Brittany

“When my daughter made her first friend, I knew she was growing up. My best friend had a baby the month before me so we’ve been getting them together since they were newborns but for a long time they didn't even notice the other one was there. One day though she just looked right over at him and gave a big smile and started to babble and I knew my baby was starting to really grow up.”
