Put a Twist in Your Lemonade with Oranges!

Orange-lemonade-eatpicksWhen the mercury rises, there is nothing that quenches thirst better than a nice tall glass of cool lemonade. It conjures up memories of hot, hazy days spent rocking in a wooden chair, telling stories with a neighbor as the world slowly passes by. When you sip, you can’t help but think of summer.

There are a lot of special mixes out there that can give you the taste of summer in a glass in mere minutes, but I like to take the fresh approach. Although it takes a few moments more, I can control the sweetness and it is well worth the effort to squeeze a few lemons.

The secret to this lemonade is making simple syrup first. When seeing this in a recipe, do not be deterred! It is really easy- and saves you from stirring and stirring trying to get sugar to dissolve. Simple syrup is great for any drink recipe that calls for granulated sugar and you can make extra to keep in the fridge!

This recipe for Orange Lemonade came about when I realized I did not have enough lemons to finish a batch. I looked to my fruit bowl and saw I had quite a few oranges, so I decided to try them and the result was fantastic!

To make a simple syrup, it’s simple really: equal parts sugar to water, simmer in pot, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves. Cool before adding to drink mixture. That’s it! You can get creative with infusing flavors such as mint, thyme, basil, vanilla, cinnamon, or whatever interests you by adding a few leaves, sprigs, beans, or sticks to the heating process. Once sugar dissolves, remove the flavor infuser before cooling. Your possibilities are endless!
