The Secret Cure For Morning Sickness

As any pregnant woman can tell you, the term “morning sickness” is an oxymoron.

Most of us preggos endure non-stop, all-day nausea and vomiting during our first trimesters and sometimes beyond.

And although not all of us reach Kate Middleton’s hyperemesis status, the “morning sickness” is just about as close to any torture as I can imagine. Honestly, there were some days that I hoped to throw up, just to relieve the nausea, so great was my desire just to get it over with. I think, in some ways, the constant nausea was worse than the actual vomiting.

Would you agree?

And while I know this isn’t exactly a lunch-friendly topic, it’s an important reality for many pregnant women and because of that I wanted to let you in on a little secret I stumbled upon.

Ok, are you ready?

The one, super-easy, affordable cure for morning sickness that you simply must try is this:

peppermint candies.

I stumbled upon this little cure for morning sickness during my first pregnancy and it literally saved my life. As long as I could pop one of those little peppermint candies in my mouth, I could enjoy a temporary respite from the seemingly never-ending morning sickness.

The most important thing about employing this home remedy for morning sickness, however, is that you must use authentic peppermints. Those little chewy ones or the “artificially-flavored” candies will not cut it. You must buy the authentic, old-fashioned hard peppermint candies for the magic to be effective. I think it’s the real peppermint in the candies that does the trick.

I found the best place to buy the authentic peppermint candies was in the bulk candy aisle at my local grocery store. I loaded up on a giant bag of the peppermints so I was able to keep a stash in my purse, car, and in my boyfriend’s car. Plus, the candies were cheaper that way.

I tell everyone I know about my peppermint candy morning sickness trick because it saved the day for me in my pregnancy. I’m not sure how I would have survived working night shift and finishing college without them!

I was suffering from severe morning sickness but didn’t want to take meds. I cured my sickness through a home remedy no to morning sickness tea.

I too dealt with nausea all day long hoping just to vomit so I could feel some sense of relief, seems like that’s the only thing that made me feel better that’s until I was introduced to these pepper mints which I was greatful for and stocked up on them, I wish I had know about them during my prior 3 pregnancies and sooner into my last pregnancy with my current baby but thank goodness for them as they did relief my ALL DAY SICKNESS. I’m sure they won’t help everyone but they worked for me

I think the main thing about this article is that Chaunie is offering a tip for relief, which I greatly appreciate whether vomiting or not. I understand what she means about wanting to vomit to find relief. Having the dry heaves (like I have been having) almost feels frustrating because there is no result and you feel like you are actually going through the motion for nothing. I am going to try this trick and hope that it works for me. I appreciate advice that people provide to us first timers. Thank you!

Sara, I was trying to debunk this myth. In saying that "the constant nausea was worse than the actual vomiting," the author showed that she does not understand women who deal with vomiting during their morning sickness, much less hyperemesis. That is completely understandable if she has not dealt with it, but in reading it, I felt sad for pregnant women who would see yet another blog post by someone who doesn’t "get it," which is why I shared my link. However, you reiterated her point, which shows that not only do you understand, but you don’t want to. That, my blogging friend, is a shame. I had really hoped for more.

  5. Gabrielle – Thanks for sharing your own post. Like Chaunie, I would long for the days I actually vomited, because that often brought temporary relief. I was lucky in that my sickness abated by the second trimester, but my sister was sick like you for her entire pregnancy. It sounds like you found some relief in the medications – I did as well. But it’s entirely understandable that pregnancy was not an enjoyable time for you – and I’m so sorry that you had such an experience.

No, I really don’t agree that all day nausea is worse than vomiting itself. Take it from someone who vomited 3-5 times a day–the nausea feels miserable and awful, but the vomiting wears you out. And then you’re STILL nauseous afterwards. Honestly, I’m very glad I’m not pregnant right now or your post would’ve made me cry. It’s just one more post that shows how few people really "get it." Here’s my post on what morning sickness is like for me. I have others on my tips and tricks for coping, but nothing cures it. http://mamagab.blogspot.com/2012/06/morning-sickness-and-me.html

    I also took spearmint mints.
